Not Like the Others Harley’s Story by Denise Grusensky is a short children’s story about a Yorkshire Terrier named Harley. It talks about his beginnings as well as other things that have been scary for him in his life time. Most specifically the story talks about how Harley’s owners found out that he has diabetes and then cataracts. In the story his owners do all of the research necessary in order to ensure that they can properly care for Harley given his new health challenges.

Sometimes when a child, or even an adult, has a medical condition or characteristic that is new, unusual or unique it can make them feel different and isolated from those around them. The story shows Harley expressing his fears as ...more

This is the tale of Harley the Yorkshire Terrier who has diabetes – told by Harley himself. Harley, we learn, was a rescue dog, who got his second chance with Denise when he was just one year old. Fortunately for Harley, Denise and Denton love him way too much to do anything like that, and have learned how to deal with his diabetes and subsequent ...more

Harley was given up for adoption because his original owner could not look after him any longer. Harley is suffering from diabetes which has made caring for him become a very difficult task. Harley was left with having to deal with ...more

I was touched
Harley is a small dog who despite his diabetes finds a loving home. The book points out that with the right information and understanding it’s not impossible to care for an animal with disabilities and give them a good life. I was touched by the reviews at the beginning of the book where children with diabetes had been helped to understand by reading this book, that their condition wasn’t a reason for anyone to think they were a ‘problem’ and that they would be loved unconditional
