Okay, I'll admit it: I wasn't that thrilled with this little gem the first time I read it. I sort of thought, "Uh...what's the point? He's a whiny little thing, isn't he?" It took the brilliance of Judy Freeman to get me to give the Pigeon another chance, and when I looked at it through her eyes, I saw the genius.

Pigeon is just, well, every single one of us who doesn't get his way. Every kid recognizes himself in Pigeon's behavior, and it makes them laughandlaughandlaugh.

A short but snappy story from popular cartoonist Mo Willems. 'Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus' is guaranteed to leave you with a big smile on your face! I am not ashamed to say that this story brought out the dramatist in me as I read it out loud to a mother and toddler group!

The best part had to be the glorious double page spread of illustrations showing all of the pigeon's techniques to convince you to let him drive the bus... "Your MUM said that I could...", "I'll give ...more

Although this book truly belongs to my almost 2-year-old daughter, I have to admit that I get a huge thrill out of reading it, even three times in one sitting.

The illustration is very simple, yet somehow capable of conveying a wide range of toddler emotions. The positioning of the pupil, head and wings effectively communicates to the young reader what even words cannot to the adult reader.

Parents get a good laugh out of the question that arises: Just who is driving this bus, anyway? Chil...more

Cute interactive book for older preschoolers. Your child needs to have a grasp of right and wrong and a sense of humor to appreciate this book. In other words it's probably not so great for toddlers. The reason is that your child has to "get" that the pigeon in this book is being obnoxious and naughty. The pigeon tries to wheedle, wine and bargain his way into driving the bus (which has been left in your care by the bus driver with the explicit instructions NOT TO LET THE PIGEON DR...more

Called "one of the great read aloud books" by Steve Barancik of Children's Book Review¹, this picture book uses simple line drawings and a minimal amount of dialogue to create a sweet and entertaining story. It features a pigeon who begs and pleads to be allowed to drive a bus using common childhood arguments. The audience get to say 'no' over and over again, putting them in the role of the parents. The pigeon is denied from driving the bus, showing children that incessant begging is ...more

I wasn't terribly impressed with this book the first time I read it (to myself). Later I read it aloud to my friend's boys (ages three and four or so at the time), and it was a completely different experience. It was suddenly a delightful story as the boys responded when I directed the questions in the story at them ("Hey, can I drive the bus? Please?"), and they really got a kick out of the story. That interaction made a huge difference in my enjoyment of the book, and now I think...more

This was a book that was featured at one of our Scholastic book fairs a few years back. Mo Willems has such a great sense of humor and this one just tickles my funny bone- as do ALL of the Pigeon books. This was the first of the series and still one of my favorites. There are great little details in there with the expression on the face of the pigeon. My students, even though they are 10 or 11, loved these books with me and one even made her own version of the book for my wedding! Great to ...more

One of the best kids books ever. The pictures are simple and so is the story. It invites the child into a dialogue with the naughty, scheming pigeon and encourages discussion with the child about emotions and frustration. Kids are so fascinated with this book because they are able to play an authority role in an interactive dialogue but also have room to be mischevious along with the pigeon. The genious within this little book is it's ability to stage role-playing for the young child.

I'm just a big kid at heart and the goofier the illustrations in a book, the more I'm gonna love it. Mo Willems' pigeon absolutely makes me laugh my arse off every time I look at the little fellow. My two favorite illustrations in this book are: 1) when pigeon gets really mad and freaks out (that's a two pager) and 2) when he is his sad self. Mo's very simple drawings are highly effective to easy-to-please simpletons like me and so I would imagine children would love them as well!

I planned an author highlight pj storytime with Mr. Mo as the starring author, and man am I glad I did! I'd only ever read one book of his and remembered I liked it, but now I'm pretty much caught up on his books thus far and they are like fast friends to me!

This book was a HUGE hit with my five and six year olds at my school, the whole class would yell out "NOOOO!!" every time the pigeon would try to drive the bus.

OH and go to Mo's website for cry pete - it's fantastic!

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is one of the best children's books I have ever read. It's interactive, entertaining and that pigeon is just so darn cute! I read to first graders at a local elementary school and they've been devouring everything by Mo Willems. I also read to a group of college students, just for kicks, who also love Mo. I would love further children's books recommendations.

Hands down my favorite kid's book that has been published in the last 5 years. Simple illustrations. Hilarious story. Great interactive book to read with the child---the pigeon talks directly to the reader.
If you want my honest opinion, I don't see why you wouldn't let the pigeon drive the bus, I mean his uncle Earl is afterall a bus driver.
*Best read outloud with a South Dakotan accent!

This book is so simple, but so funny. Throughout the story the pigeon is trying to convince you, the reader, to let him drive the bus even after the bus driver told you not to. This book would be great for discussing persuasive writing or for practicing the comprehension strategy of summarizing.

I really love Mo Willems' books. They are simple to read with a child and the pictures are to funny. Mo Willems is very creative when it comes to his Pigeon and the many adventures he takes on. Another reason I like his books are, children can actully sit there and enter act while you're reading it to them. When the Pigeon ask if he can drive the bus, they can say no to him!

This is a fun and funny book that kids of all ages will love. The drawings are very simple, which just adds to the personality and uniqueness of the story. Your kids will be yelling out "NO!" to the pigeon as he tries to think of any excuse to be allowed to drive the bus after the bus driver tells you to make sure he doesn't drive it. A definite family favorite.

A classic kids book that everybody should be able to say, "why, yes, I have read Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!" This book is absolutely hilarous! Just looking at the pigeon's little face as he tries to convince you that he is ready and willing to drive that bus totally cracks me up. Mo Willems did a stellar job, I highly recommend this book.

This book brings back great memories of being one of the storytellers for the children's department at Barnes & Noble. This is a GREAT read-aloud book. I read this to my nephew and he DEMANDED that I read it to him again and again and again and...again. Now that's a good endorsement, don't you think? All of Mo Willems' stuff is a lot of fun.

I was introduced to the pigeon through my nieces and nephews. They heard the books read by their fabulous kindergarten teacher. I love the pigeon. He is hilarious! I especially love to hear my eight-year- old niece read them - they have helped to improve her fluency and expression. I promise that this book will make you laugh.

I get to buy lots of children's books for my 7 nephews and my niece (though some of the nephews are now moving rapidly out of childhood!). This is one of my favorites. Any book that can make me laugh hard enough to snort while I'm reviewing it in the bookstore is generally a hit with the kids. The pigeon is endearingly obnoxious!
