Published in 1889, Volume 1 of the American Statesmen series. A warm appraisal of a great American. Written as part of a series, it purposely skims over the details of parts of Franklin's life which are dealt with in more detail in other volumes. Still, the book is of interest for what it does contain, and particularly so since Mr. Morse covers in depth, and is fiercely defensive of, Franklin's activity as Envoy to France, in which role Franklin had to contend not only with constant demands ...more
