I read the intro and.....Basically it was a campaign for Vance heroes as regular fellas running around and doing incredible things to the environment they are written into with wits and brains rarely employed before.

I'll start with a disclaimer: Jack Vance is one of my favorite fiction authors, so he's an easy sell. However, this collection is a great example of his skill at weaving evocative language and picaresque situations into highly entertaining short stories. His characters are amusing and charismatic, and like most Vance works, plot is incidental, almost accidental. Probably a good introduction for someone curious to try him -- the stories are short, and so it won't take too long to make up your min...more
Clever and sometimes funny stories. Especially well written. Another easier to find Vance would do as well, I'm sure. Everything of his that I have read passes the internal logic test. A good start for those who have thrown out the SF baby w/ the bathwater, where the SF elements are a device, not a burden.
