I love books based on fairy tales, but it's taken me forever to really read any of Maguire's stuff. I still haven't read "Wicked." Years ago, I tried reading this book and just couldn't get into it. But with so many people telling me how great this guy is, I decided to give it another shot.

This book follows the story of Iris and Ruth, two little girls who, with their mother, flee from England after their father is murdered. Poor and begging, they have no choice but to first take a...more

Reading this book was like finding an old friend after not speaking with them for a while, which is the feeling I have when I read a book after seeing the movie based upon it - at least when I like them both. As it was based on the fairy-tale about Cinderella, there was little surprise about its ending (we were already expecting her to get the prince, of course), though this particular tale's last chapter does not point to the happy ever after finale we're so used to see in fairy-tales. Perhaps ...more

There were some details in this book that had 'Cinderella' written all over them (step-sisters/step-mother, a ball, a prince, a lost shoe) but the bulk of the story lies outside of the original fairy-tale. The 'Cindergirl' of this story, though beautiful, lacks the more admirable qualities of her beauty-challenged stepsister. It's the stepsister who ultimately finds her own kind of happiness, although without the infamous prince. Her story is the main focus, revolving around her misguided mother...more

I wish this system had half stars - I'd give "Confessions" a 4.5. Perhaps I should even give it a 5. I'm surprised I ended up enjoying this book so much. When my friend loaned it to me I didn't start on it for a long time, and I read several books in-between starting and finishing this one. I was expecting it to be silly and light and humorous, because of the title, but silly it is not. I found it rather dark and heavy to begin with, though from the start I found Gregory Maquire's w...more

The first book by Gregory Maguire I read (I have since read 'Wicked' and 'Son of a Witch') and it is still my favorite one of his writings.

Somehow I thought this would be funny or at least amusing and in reality it is this sad story about the stepsisters that try to help Cinderella (Clara) out whenever they can. They even take her side against their own mother.

The book begins long before the known fairy tale of Cinderella and goes beyond the "happily ever after"-concept....and ...more

In the lives of children, pumpkins can turn into coaches, mice and rats into human beings. When we grow up, we learn that it’s far more common for human beings to turn into rats.

If magic was present, it moved under the skin of the world, beneath the ability of human eyes to catch sight of it.

Immortality is a chancy thing; it cannot be promised or earned. Perhaps it cannot even be identified for what it is.

It’s the place of the story, beginning here, in the meadow of late summer f...more

I love fairy tale retellings...especially the ones that try to be the "True" version.
Set in 17th century Holland during the Tulip craze this version of Cinderella is by far my favorite. The central character is not Cinderella (who is a spoiled brat) but Iris, the youngest of the two step-sisters.
Margarethe returns to her homeland, Holland, with her two daughters - plain Iris and simple Ruth, afer her husband is murdered in England. She becomes the housekeeper for a painter. T...more

This was an easy read and an interesting take on the "Cinderella" story, but it wasn't amazing. It felt like it gave a very long build-up to a climax that was vague and unexciting and a denouement that was pretty disappointing. Only as an epilogue do we discover what happened to Iris, the main character of the book, and even then, it is brief and without many details.

Many of the ideas introduced into the storyline also felt as though they were left hanging at the end of the book....more

It took me until about page 150 to REALLY be in to this book. At about page 100 I gave myself until page 200 to decide if I was going to be a quitter or not. By page 200 I was amazed at how good it had gotten. It's historical fiction, taking place in 17th century Holland, and it's brutal. The magic of the Cinderella story spun into it is incredible. It's true to itself without being too whimsical. By the time I finished it I was blown away with it. Maguire spun a gorgeous story that just kept tw...more

I remember when I read this book for the first time. I bought it the day after it came out, because I was already obsessed with Gregory Maguire despite the fact that he had only written one other adult book at that point.

I started the novel in the morning, the day I had to take my parents to the airport in Kalamazoo. We left that evening because their flight was an early morning one. I read and read in the car, getting fairly far. When we got to the hotel and had to go to bed, I COULD ...more

SO glad to know that Gregory Maguire is capable of doing another good book besides Wicked, after my deep disappointment in Lost. I'm not sure if I liked this one better than Wicked, since I read that a while ago, but I did like it a lot. In a lot of ways, I really related to Iris, though I'm still unclear on my feelings for Clara. In many ways she is scarred from her childhood trauma, and her beauty is both her salvation and her curse. She seems at times to be deeper and more selfless, but u...more

i read alot of rewritten fairy tales, but so far this is my favourite (next to an ebook called "ember" that i'm reading right now)

it's set during the "dutch renaissance" (you know jan van eyck, hugo van der goes, hans holbeins, bosch, judith leyster) and is as much about painting as it is about love, obsession, conflict and family.

textures, smells, studio lights and darks- the painter's life literally surrounds you while reading this book. i think macguire's work is v...more

Maguire's ability to come up with an interesting story is far better than his ability to tell the story. His writing is often a bit too labored, his symbolism too transparent, and his literary devices a bit clunky.

Like 'Wicked', 'Confessions' offers the reader a variation on a well-known story. Also like 'Wicked', 'Confessions' is not really all that much to write home about. A somewhat creative variation, but one in which many of the characters are incredibly hard to like, and the story ...more

An intelligent and delightful twist to the original story. Gregory Maguire has a unique talent of blending cultural and fairy tail into fascinating stories of strong independant women who defy the accepted norms of today's society, condemning and challenging the ideals of shallow commercialism. For me, Maguire's search for truth finds that true beauty is found within, and the outer beauty that is eagerly sought and coveted is actually a curse to those that posses it.
The story abandons emotion...more

I was really trying to find a new author to leach on to when I started reading Gregory Maguire. But after three mediocre-good books, I am done. I'll just have to pull out the old favorites for a re-read if I want a great book, or wait for the few great authors I know that are alive to come out with another one...

I liked this book, though. It was kind of fun, and I whizzed through it in a couple of days, taking care of a sick child and cooped up in the house. I'm just not sure that Maguire is...more

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the idea of taking a fairy tale and adding a modern spin to it. Most authors who've done this have emphasised the fantastic and erotic elements, or the mythic character of the tale, or they've taken a political/feminist approach. Angela Carter, Tanith Lee, Neil Gaiman and China Miéville have used such approaches with great success. Gregory Maguire, however, has adopted a very different approach. He's taken the story of Cinderella and removed all the fa...more

Gregory Maguire seemingly has no misstep! He may have made his most splendid opening with Wicked but his ability to marry fantasy, myth and a deeply moving connection to characters who feel, think, care, act, respond and manipulate their world such that the tale that has come down through the ages makes sense in light of who we now know them to be...is nothing short of remarkable! As my daughter remarked... he is likely the most illuminating 'fanfiction' writer we have read! To take character...more

I did not enjoy this book quite as much as I did some of Gregory Maguire’s other books; it was however, a fantastic read. I love the way that Gregory Maguire ties known history into his fictional tales and again found myself heavily identifying with who would have been the villain in the traditional telling of this story (well the traditional telling in the Disnified sense of the word, I am not familiar with the original Grim’s Fairytales although I do intend to correct that situation).

I read this book not too long after having read "Wicked." also by Maguire. I have to say that, while I did enjoy this book, I found it a little more tough to get through than "Wicked." His basic style was the same. He took the story of Cinderella and made it his own, changing the perspective to that of the ugly stepsisters. While I did find the characters in this book interesting, I did not find most of them very likeable. His realistic fairtale is also an allegory on the na...more

I can't rate this one without rereading.

At the time (2000!), I was totally into buying books with titles that all sounded the same. This was about the time I read My Sister From the Black Lagoon. Something about the promise of sisterhood and potential hideousness appealed to me. At that same time I was also an incredibly lazy reader because I spent half this book not knowing what a CHANGELING was, not bothering to look it up in a dictionary until I'd lost (nearly) all interest. HOLY I...more
