For regionalist writing, these stories are more conscious of extra-regional issues than one might expect. The major characteristic of the collection is the conflict between capitalism and personal connection. Thanet, like her Midwestern contemporary Hamlin Garland, comes down on the Populist side of things. "Tommy and Thomas" is probably the best story here; several others are tarnished by too-easy conclusions.
