Even my seventh grade self found this sequal to the Belgariad to be laughably self-derivitive, and seeing that Eddings is perhaps the poster-child for derivitive fantasy to begin with, that means this book is about as un-original as it gets. Its the same characters, the same setting, and (this is when the snickering comes in), the same plot. The fact that the characters themself are aware of this (at one point, one of them asks "If feels as if we've done all of this before") doesn't ...more

Unfortunately, David Eddings basically repeats all of the themes of the Belgariad in the Mallorean. We experience the same conflict, but with characters that have grown since the first installment. He cleverly (or obviously, take your pick) covers himself for the repetition by virtue of a plot device (you can read it yourself), but it's a little thin. Overall, it's still a very enjoyable read and takes your much deeper into the lore of the world that he's created.

This is different than what I would normally read seeing as it's an "adventure/fantasy" story. I would say it`s a mix between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and I loved it. A friend suggested it and although I was hesitant, I read it. I'm not sure it's for everyone and perhaps it's geared towards adolescents but it is interesting nonetheless.

Of course it wasn't over after only five books.
This volume contains the first three volumes in the second journey of Belgarion of Riva. If you wanted to start The Belgariad over as soon as you read the last word, then this book is the answer.

Forget Robert Jordan. David Eddings is the one who knows how to write compelling fantasy- with humor, with love, and with great characters.
The Malloreon is the sequel series to the Belgariad, and it is superb.

A favorite of mine as a child, with characters of perhaps a stereotypical sort, but well-written and enjoyable in the end. Plenty of magic, mayhem, plots, and characters, these books whet my appetite for fantasy.

Sequel to the Belgariad - I thought it was ok, comparable to the first series. Again, a bit juvenile compared to most hard core fanatasy books, but still entertaining - don't expect any complicated themes...

It was so nice to go back to a place where good wins because it's supposed to. Coming back to The world of the Belgariad was like coming home to old friends and family.

Not as great as the first 5 books (the Belgariad), but if you liked them, this is certainly worth reading at least once. Very entertaining. I've read them twice.

My favorite fantasy series and my first! I had to hide these from my Mom because I was only allowed to read books for the Christian Bookstore.

The maturity of the characters gives this series an added depth, and the plot as a whole emphasized the importance of family relationships.

I actually read this book a while ago, can't remember to much. Once I do I'll put a different rating and write another review

I read these individually ages ago, but to save space I've rated the compilations of each series

The Belgariad's grown-up sequel, which I first read in fifth grade. Different, but just as good.

Follow up to the Eddings first series -- enjoyable, although not nearly as good.
