"Guide right! Dovinger's Rangers! Rally on the guidon! Rally on the reserve!"

So cries a young pennant bearer on a white horse, emerging from a bloody battlefield of the American Civil War, though his entire squadron has been wiped out.

The doctors suspect dementia, and when he eventually collapses unconscious a chaplain relieves him of the guidon, hiding it from sight.

The young man, Casper Girard, recovers from his shock to become a respected captain. After the war he endeavors to better himself
