This is a solid Jo Beverly novel, easy to read, amusing, sexy and historically interesting. what gives it the last star for me is the quote from the Saxon poem at the beginning of the book.

Dawn often finds me grieving in solitude/for there is no one still living/with home I dare share/the truth of my heart.

(I apologize if the quote is wrong, I have to use my memory as my copy of the book is at the back of a bookshelf stacked three deep.)

Jo Beverly always includes a lot of hisorical insight into her books and this one delivers with what the initial conguest of England by the Normans might have been like. The hero & heroine are drawn toghether but like real people, if they would just share their concerns, problems would disappear. This is a good book once you get "into" it and it keeps the pace until the end.

I loved that Madeline stayed true to who she was no matter what obstacles came her way. Aimery what such a boor at times! Grrr! But all in all I was happy and satisfied with this book!

Kitabı okurken ilk dikkati çeken şey tarihi detaylar.. Kahramanlar arasındaki stratejik ilişkiler, kim Normandiyalı? Kim Sakson? Bizim baş karakterdeki kızımız onuruna ...more

İçeriğine gelirsek Madeleine annesine verdiği söz nedeniyle rahibelik eğitimi almak için manastırda ...more

I loved this book. This book was the BOM on one of my groups so I purchased it and I wasn't disappointed.
Our heroine is Madleine and her father and brother have died and she has to choose a husband from 3 Lords King William has chosen for her. She needs to pick the one who will help her save her home and land.
Aimery is our hero. He is Saxon and Norman so he is trying to be loyal to his father and King but he also has loyalties to his Saxon family. He has heard that Madeliene is as mean and cruel

For reasons unknown to me, I had this listed as fourth in the series. I'm pretty sure I've read Dark Champion - now I need to find a copy of The Shattered rose before tackling Lord or Midnight which I've got on my TBR pile.
I was only medium keen to read something set around the time of the Battle of Hastings (1066, still one of the rare dates I retain), but I was nonetheless swept up into the story and enjoyed the perhaps somewhat overlong trials of Madeleine and Aimery. Ye olde misunderstandi

Well-researched history, blended with a very good story. Lost a couple stars only because there were some emotional elements set up that I don't think were resolved completely and satisfactorily. Still, if you're a fan of the series, this is a must read.

Nauseating, what am I saying, totally disgusting. I gave up after some chapters, couldn't stand the story and the characters anymore. So, did not finish. =__= I have read better books with the same settings. So, nope, not even one star.

I could not...

Put it down once I got past the first chapters. The characters were complex and likeable. The happy ending was appreciated since I am not sure if I could have dealt with an unhappy one.

Historical/medieval romance. If you are looking for a quick decent book to fill in a weekend this would do it. It wasn't the best I have read but it wasn't the worst either. This book kept me reading but I was easy not to ignore the world which I am known to do when I read.

Aimery, a Norman lord in recently conquered England, works undercover as the Golden Hart to help the people. He is forced to marry Madeleine, an heiress that he thinks is cruel.

OK. Hero/heroine are a little bland. Too depressing.

I started this book a little on the skeptical side, it just wasn't what I was expecting. But I kept reading and fell in love with this book, it's characters, it's history, and the writing.
