How to forget the suave voice of Marlène Diétrich in "The blue angel". In the family Mann I knew Thomas. It is because of Marlène that I discovered the older brother. With turbulent Heinrich, whose Nazis burned the books, we are far from "Death in Venice".
It is the history of a forfeiture. A professor psychorigide give up everything

I hardly know why I 'really liked it' - for some reason it kept me on the edge of my seat. And that even though it has a number of structural flaws as well as a less-than-clear message (although that might have been part of the fascination).

The title "Professor Unrat, or the End of a Tyrant" makes you expect the Professor to be the bad guy but (at least for my taste) everybody in this book is equally bad, with the exception, perhaps, of the actress Fröhlich, who only has loose morals but no ill-

Recommends it for: students of German literature, historians, bibliophiles

Enjoyable book about a professor's obsession with a singer at the blue angel and his need for revenge on those he believes have slighted him. Old mud as he's known Isn't a likeable character and it's not easy to like Rosa.

An interesting pairing of Mann's novel Professor Rath (here called The Blue Angel, because of the film) and the "continuity script" of the famous Marlene Dietrich movie based loosely on the novel. The two are very different, though the central character in each case is the professor who falls for a cabaret singer. I had never realized Mann wrote the novel (or that the movie was based on a novel) until I saw it mentioned along with Hesse's Beneath the Wheel and Musil's Young Torless. Mann's novel ...more

Professor Unrat by Heinrich Mann
What a downfall…or is it the reverse?

I am not sure how famous professor Unrat is. I knew about The Blue Angel, a film with Marlene Dietrich, but had never heard about the professor before this morning.
Sure, professor Rath is the lead male role in the film, but it is Dietrich who steals the show and makes everybody else in the movie forgettable.
The version I hear is an adaptation for Romanian National Radio, with George Constantin in the main role. If Marlene Diet

One of the few books that is absolutely surpassed by the film.

I wouldn't say that Professor Unrat is a bad book, really. It's perfectly ... fine. The first third of the novel was actually quite interesting, particularly in regard to Rath's (in this translation, Mut--okay, fine, whatever. Just change the guy's name. Grrr.) impotent rage at his students. The scene where he goes to the cobbler to try and get the deets on the mysterious Rosa Frölich is pretty funny--the cobbler's thoughts on marital

Interesting book about a smalltown teacher.
In the Dutch translation, the main protagonist is called Metz. Misspelled as Mest, you get a nickname that refers to manure.

Heinrich does a good job in portraying a man who is stuck in his role as teacher. There are only two kinds of people for Metz: students and ex students. The entire book revolves around Metz trying to get revenge on those who take/took the piss out of him.

Heinrich is more accessible than Thomas: less philosophical and he delivers

The first book I have read of Heinrich Mann. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The portrait of the professor is really well done. I like to read a book where you don't sympathize with the main character(s) and you wait for your opinion to change, for them to change into something better. But that didn't happen in this book and that makes it even more interesting. This book is about hatred, revenge, personal gain but also about the meaning of life and the wish for acknowledgement.

Überraschend träge, langatmig & redundant. Schade um die vereinzelten, sehr guten Passagen.

Seriously, why do we always have to read such shitty books for school?

This is a classic, and very clever - but I still found it a bit of a slog. You'd think that I'd enjoy a satire (early 20th c.) about a mean old high-school classics teacher (his life work, which will of course never be completed: the particles in Homer) whose career gets derailed when he takes up with a woman of dodgy reputation - but actually it was just a bit too mean-spirited for me to get caught up in it.

mhh hmm yeaah idk

Good solid fun read. This novel was made into the movie 'The Blue Angel'. That said, it is not in the same league as the great Thomas Mann novels which can transform your life.
Johanna
Not the usual kind of book genre I like, but Mann's story kept me focused and excited all the way through the book. And I liked it even more when I read it a second time.

As expected, a bit different from the film adaption, Der blaue Engel.

A German novelist who wrote works with social themes whose attacks on the authoritarian and increasingly militaristic nature of post-Weimar German society led to his exile in 1933.

Born in Lübeck as the oldest child of Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann and Júlia da Silva Bruhns. He was the elder brother of Thomas Mann. His father came from a patrician grain merchant family and was a Senator of the Hansea
