Each story is simple. Each story can be read in just ten minutes. Yet, in these seemingly short windows, Paul Cumbo takes his reader on a truly captivating journey. Ironically, the stories rarely climactically pop as most short stories do. Rather, I found myself charmed by the glimpses of human nature caught in the story’s various characters. Through these intimate stories, we bounce from one of life’s stages to the next. Each commentary an unexpected journey, yet consistently heartfelt and ...more

My review will go up once it hits the paper.

In the final throes of last semester, a last minute email was sent around to the Griffin staff, asking if anyone knew of someone who would be willing to read and write a book review. The current film critic is a friend of mine and got in touch with me, asking if I would do it. I suppose the answer I gave was obvious; six months later and I’m still writing reviews. The first book I ever reviewed for the Griffin was written by a Canisius alum by the name

Though the collection opens with a flying bullet, Ten Short Stories by Paul Cumbo does not attempt to drive its narratives with flashiness or always even attempt significant dynamic action. Author Paul Cumbo is proving himself to be a writer who deals in subtleties, and exercises a surprising mastery of nuances that bring his central creations to life. On a broad level, the stories serve as intimate and sometimes gripping character profiles on human beings. The author's focus is usually acute, ...more

it started off decent, and I understood the first three stories were connected. The third one made no sense and left me trying to figure out what it was about. My english teacher told us a story was like a skirt, long enough to cover the subject and short enough to keep it interesting. These were short but for me didn't cover the subject.

Hands down Paul Cumbo's second book gets a perfect score. Thoughtful, engaging, heartfelt, and creative, the up and coming author illustrates different monumental events in a person's life through ten short stories. "Ten Stories" is perfect for "pre-bedtime reading" or a gift for a friend or family member of any age!

As a die hard short story fan, this effort from Paul Cumbo hit all the right notes for me. Each story was memorable and left me completely satisfied.
