bookshelves: 20th-century, french
Read in May, 2008
recommended to Abi by: Timothy Baycroft
recommends it for: The dedicated and patient literature fan with a good deal of spare time.
I read this because of Timothy Baycroft. I took his module on the Third Republic in France, HST234, in the first semester of my second year. I asked his advice on what novel to read to gain a better understanding of the period. À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu was his recommendation. And so it began. I later asked him how long it had taken him to read it, and it turns out he never has. I felt slightly conned, but this is now outweighed by ...more

This book is good reading if you have huge chunks of captive free time (like my 50 minute train commute). If you cannot dedicate at least 1.5 hrs a day, 4-5 days a week to reading, it is probably not worth starting. At that pace, I finished the novel in about 4 months with a week break between each volume and a few days of desperate magazine huffing in the middle of Guermantes Way.

I read half in the modern library classics edition and half in the newer penguin translation. I had an easier ti...more

So I read this in French, and have yet to purchase an English edition. I'm still trying to figure out which one is the best.

This novel (made up of 6 individual books, each with many parts) is amazing. But it's also very long and unless you have an enormous interest in French etiquette, you need to know which sections to read. Swann's way is definitely the best of all of the books. But the story about Swann doesn't end until many volumes later when you actually find out what everything is abo...more

recommends it for: everyone (with patience)
The passing of time and the nature of memory. The protagonist(s) serve as vehicles in an exploration of the lives and deaths of memory and event across fin-de-siecle France. This is really a beautiful novel (although it is in 6 parts) and should be considered by anyone who regards our lives as a collection of memories and resides in the comfort and concurrent sadness of knowing they themselves will eventually fade into oblivion along with their own memories.

Actually, I'm reading an edition earlier than the one posted online. Found it on the dusty bookshelves of our Norvega home. Reading the entire opus may take me the rest of my life, which bothers me not at all.

The idea of trying this came from author Mary Gordon, writing in the NYT about her writerly disciplines. She reads 3 pages a day, then once done, begins all over again.

& I have discovered that 3 pages a day is richly adaquate!

I originally read these individually and recently bought this collection - I have no intention of rereading it all. To paraphrase Flannery - "It was something. I have no desire to reread it, but I'm glad that I did".

I suggest dragging all 10-12lb with you to some foreign country where they serve Guinness on tap and it's overcast a lot.

This collection is good for reading or possibly stopping bullets.

not over-rated! i read the whole thing in thailand maybe 12 years ago. ready to read it again. the late great shelby foote used to read the whole thing once a year!

warning--some dirty parts. and some sodomy.

(i read the modern library hardcovers. the moncrief translation. i haven't read the new translations coming out from viking/penguin).

despite the snorts, Proust is really a captivating writer. sometimes the story drags, ie during long excursions in which he muses on the aristocracy. It did take me about 5 or 6 months to read them all, and for part of that I was laid up with a seperated shoulder, but I still think it's feasible for the employed person read

It took a long time to read, and I'm not sure I'll ever have time to sit down and read it again. Proust does a great job of describing the mindset of his character. Even though about 95% of what he thinks will have no relevance to you, the other 5% will just hit you hard, and that's why it's worth reading.

Read Swann's Way in the fall. I'll be That Girl on the train reading the rest as soon as I get my books from Santa Fe. Being That Girl will bother me only a little. If I start missing my stops on a regular basis, I will be bothered a lot. But probably keep reading.

a very beautiful boredom slowly and elegantly floats around like a chain of lazy smokes in windless dim-lighted bedroom searching for immortality of artistic creation

One doesn't really read Proust; one experiences Proust. Definitely not for everyone, this is a difficult recommend. Definitely wordy - with paragraphs lasting for pages. The pay-offs are great, though, if you've got the patience and tenacity to enter his world.

OK, I have begun another challenge whilst reading War and Peace - Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. I've only read the preface and the note on the translation. I plan to delve into it this weekend after I finish World Without End. More later...

I haven't read all this yet but I keep planning to. In fact, I think it's going to be just the thing to keep me busy on my hol in France this summer. If I can make it through War and Peace I'm sure this will be a piece of cake (madeleine?)

Okay, so I'm not through it yet (read Swann's Way 3 years ago or so) and just haven't been able to get back to it. Proust is just a bit verbose (surprise, surprise) and it's quite an effort to read...

I began reading Proust a few years ago, but did not make much headway into the novels. As soon as I am not constantly trying to make up for my own lost time -- I'll start again.

I spent six months reading this (and only this) in the summer of 2004. At times infuratingly slow and plodding, it rewards you with the parts that are simply breathtaking.
