In Sin rumbo Cambaceres portraits scenes of the Argentine upper class at the turn of the XIX Century. Detailed and realistic the author defines with literary uniqueness the atmosphere with the initial clash during the sheep shearing scene. Then come the noon horseback ride to the peasant woman's shack, the forced seduction down to complete surrender in body and soul, and ...more

Dear Argentine School Children,

I am sorry you have to read this in school. Hey, at least it's short, no?

To be honest, I bought this book like three years ago and started reading it but then dropped it, and now a couple of days ago while doing some cleaning up, I found it and decided to give Cambaceres a second shot. I know I tend to read foreing writers more than national or Latin American authors, so I went for it and finished the story yesterday while returning from work.
The story is set during the first years of the 20th century Argentina and the main character is Andrés, a wealthy estanciero (

From what I can tell, this is THE Latin American Naturalist novel. It is a good read although, like in just about all my experiences with Naturalism, the protagonist is a total jerk. He treats women like they are nothing, is apparently manic depressive (wild mood swings), and is totally self-obsessed. You have to be able to get beyond his shortcomings and examine how he deals with European philosophy of the day, and the impact this has on his life. The final scene is completely over-the-top, and ...more

I had to read this for a Spanish class, but it was pretty interesting. My first adult Spanish novel, it is a good representation of naturalism.

Excellent-built character in a determined historic period. Stunning ending, it left me speechless. Amazing psychological thriller.
