This is hardly the first book that aims to question the borders of an entrenched field, pushing it to draw “global” connections that cast shadows on previously-respected regional and conceptual boundaries. In Burton and Ballantyne’s case it is the history of empire, which has long focused on politics and trade, and remained relatively attached to the nation-state and at least some notion that imperialism was the invention of Europeans.
