This is a straightforward detective story involving various characters living in Venice, somewhat complicated and a little overlong. However it isn't so much a novel as a travelogue on Venice. You could read this book and draw a map of the City, make a reasonable fist of drafting a guidebook, and start to build a simple library of tourist Italian (well enough to get you served in Florian's).
