When we were little, American Girl publications were a pretty big deal in our house. I had a subscription to the magazine and my sister and I had dolls and books that corresponded with those dolls. Of course, as I started to grow up the American Girl phenomenon was no longer something I was interested in, but this book was still really really helpful. My mom bought it for me and left it on my bed when I was at school. She understood that some of the issues of being a pre-teen (or just hittin...more

Read this with my 8-year-old. Provided excellent framework for good conversations about all the changes that will come with puberty. Covers personal hygiene, nutrition, exercise, bras, menstruation (including diagrams showing how tampons work and details on the various things that pads or tampons are better for), and throughout, acknowledgement of all the weird ways that these things might make girls feel and how normal this is.

all pre-puberty girls
I bought this book for my almost 9 year old daughter. It was a great book for going over all the changes that would be happening in the near future. I love that it covers everything (with the exception of sex) but it lended itself so I could lead into that topic from the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a daughter that is pre-puberty and you are looking for a way to have a talk about it. I also recommend doing what we did and having a girls night shopping, dinner and then...more

This is a great mother/daughter book! I read this book with my 10 year old daughter to teach her about all the changes that happen as you mature from a girl to a young woman. We had a lot of fun reading, laughing and enjoying this book together. She looked forward to it every evening, and so did I!

This book is part of the American Girl franchise and it shows.
Some positives and negatives:
The information seems well-balanced for the most part. There's talk about diversity (but ethnic, not gender-based, size-based, or anything-else-based), the urge to compare oneself to images of women/girls in the media, deets on boobies (shapes, sizes, care, how long they take to grow, bras, etc.), eating disorders, periods, etc. But it also does some all-over grooming advice that ...more

Mothers of daughters!
Standard book for every girl! A book which should precede Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Like an owner's manual for girls ages 9-12. Includes very cute, simple explanations and cartoons about why our bodies change. I bought this for my friend's 5th grade daughter whose friends are starting their periods and can't understand what it is or why she hasn't gotten hers. She has a lot of questions her mother isn't prepared to answer, so this book should help fill in the blanks.

I got this for my daughter a while ago and I think it does an excellent job introducing lots of subjects about the body and how to care for it. It discusses more intimate subjects like developing breasts, pubic hair, periods, and even gives step-by-step instructions for how to put in a tampon and advice on shaving your armpits. However, most of the book deals with easier subjects, such as taking care of your hair, being active, eating right, and more. It does not discuss sexuality at all. I H...more

This is a very good book for girls as they are heating those pre teen years. it is the what to expect when ..." book for young girls. It goes through all the things a girl will go through with body and emotional changes. What I really liked is it does not talk about sex When I was searching for a book to help my girls I found so many did in great detail talk about sex not what I want my 10 and 11 year old to hear about. This is an American girl book they are suppose to have one out for...more

This is an excellent book, but the full five stars largely reflect the vileness of all the other books on this topic!
The Care and Keeping of you has most of the straight forward puberty related information a girl will need. And it is written in a non condescending way, which is nice.
Even though my daughter and I have talked about the puberty process at length, she really wanted a book that she could read on her own on the topic, and though I was skeptical due to the american girl ...more

If you could give a book 10 stars - this would be it!!!! My daughter is 9 years old and I am already seeing her grow into a young woman and I didn't have a clue how to approach the things she would need to know as she grew up. This book is a parents' manual to those things. You MUST get this book for your little girl! It is detailed with great illustrations and covers so much. My daughter took to it right away! This book is on my TOP 5 list!
Ah puberty and the teen years... arent they just STRESSING!! Yes they are sadly. Dont worry this guide will help you make it through these tough times that bring you down. The Care and Keeping of You will teach everything a girl needs to know about tempers and the whole well Im just not going to say it here on the internet kids. I just hope you enjoy this book because I have been using it ever since I have turned 12 and it helps a lot!

Having a young daughter with questions, I found this book to be helpful explaining how a girl’s body works and also changes. There is no beating around the bush, but the topic is still handled well. I let her read it on her own and then we had a private meeting to discuss any questions she had. We have had several good discussions since she (and I) read it. I would advise parents to read it first, before giving it to your daughter.

this is a GREAT book! it explains everything about how to take care of your body and what you expect to happen to it when a girl goes through puberty. the only thing i dont really like is the pictures of how to use tampons and the development of breasts. but i recommend you read this book BEFORE you start puberty so you will be informed and wont have as many questions to if you didnt read the book beforehand.

This is a very straight-forward, yet simply put book for young girls. I haven't read it yet with my daughter as I wanted to read it first before I talked with her, but I liked how it puts it on her level and simply, not in a manner that will scare or overwhelm her, I don't think. I'm using this as a tool to help me explain to her "growing up" and all that entails. From my perspective, I think it will be a great tool and stepping stone to get us started on that first discussion and many...more

Currently reading with my 9-1/2 year old daughter. So far, it's a great intro to many hygeine and body topics. I want to read through it with her and answer any questions she may have before putting it all in her hands.
Whew! Just made it through the whole book. Glad I had this to guide me through the rough stuff. It helped us to laugh and learn together. I highly recommend this book to cover everything from deodorant to haircare to PMS.

This book is an invaluable tool for young girls. I got this when I was 11 years old and now 10 years later, I still remember how helpful it was to me growing up. It teaches girls about their growing bodies and helps them understand the changes they are going through while giving them great health tips.

Bought this one for oldest daughter when she was 11 and it proved to be a great book. Very informative and insightful. Written so that a young teen girl would want to go through it. Glad I saved it and it's come in handy with my youngest already.
