I enjoyed 18 SECONDS immensely. I liked the way Shuman took a plot element that has been done before and relayed it in a fresh way. I dislike how this book is portrayed as a psychic thriller, psychological thriller, yes, but to call it a psychic thriller degrades it, because it's not really, which is a better angle in my opinion. A blind character in the novel possesses the ability to "see" the last 18 seconds of the person's life, when she makes physical contact. This character is not

The premise of this book is ABSURD! (though I did buy the same premise on the TV show Millenium.) That said, this is a tense, well written piece of crime fiction. It doesn't do anything original, but what it does it does well. The depiction of police investigation is perfect (when it isn't supernatural, of course) and it's every bit as gory as the Saw movies. It is about serial killers after all. This is everything that pulp fiction should be: sharp, energetic, and, dare I say, even insightful.

There are a few thoughts that push their way to the front of my mind as I'm considering this book.
The first is that the author accomplished his job admirably - he forced a connection between this reader and the characters he presented. I liked Sherry immediately. I alternated between being intrigued and annoyed with Kelly. I was infatuated with John, truly admired Mac and was overly disgusted with Sykes. But Dillon, a minor character, managed to piss me off like you wouldn't believe More...

I accidentally started reading the third or fourth novel (Second Sight) about the character, Sherry Moore, before realizing that there were earlier books. I was intrigued by the idea of Sherry's "gift". She is able to see or read the last 18 seconds of memory of the dead. It is a new and interesting concept, and explained scientifically in the book. Not sure if the science really makes a lot of sense but it is intriguing. The author used to be a cop and I found the investigation de

18 SECONDS by George D. Shuman
I found this book to be pretty flat from the beginning. It was obvious that the author was trying to weave an intricate web of connected stories, but it just came out tedious and predictable. I didn't like most of the characters, even the ones I was supposed to root for, like O'Shaughnessy - I found her quite annoying and got tired of her whining about her husband. I did like Sherry and John though, but their parts were too minor. I thought more of the boo More...

This was a great book and very different from my usual picks. Sherry Moore is a blind woman who can see a dead person's last images -- 18 seconds of it -- after making physical contact with the deceased. She helps investigators find criminals and finds that her life is woven into a serial killer's past. The interwoven stories of 5 people collide into a thrilling ending that left me breathless with my heart pounding. This book is not for the squeamish. Grizzly details are described from the ki

a little on the grim side but a good main character: a strong, young woman who is blond but "sees" the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life/what they were thinking, feeling. her life revolves around her work. she is a little in love with the police officer she works with but since he is married she never pursues it. she is very isolated in her personal life. very grim. she deals with a serial killer who turns out to have murdered her mother and began the sequence of events that resu

Law enforcement veteran George D. Shuman has written a well crafted novel that blends mystery and suspense in the story of Sherry Moore. Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book is the main character herself, Sherry. I genuinely like her and found myself rooting for her throughout the pages. She is a complex person who holds many secrets, many of which she keeps to herself. I also admire her selflessness to aid others in need, something rare to find even in the actual world.

What an original thriller! The storyline is simple enough: a blind woman who suffered massive head trauma as a child has the extraordinary capacity to 'see' the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life by touching their corpse. However, what she sees is not necessarily coherent - in the period of time right before a person dies, a host of memories come flooding back that are more or less unintelligible to a stranger. But Sherry Moore has had success with her gift, and has helped solve numerous my

I was starting to get a little bored of the serial killer genre and then George Shuman steps into the arena with his singularly beguiling heroine, Sherry Morre.
Sherry Moore suffered an accident at a very young age that has left her both blind and unable to remember her life before being found on the steps of a Philadelphia hospital. However, when she touches the hand of a corpse she can see vividly the last 18 seconds of their life.

This was a book I blindly picked up at a library book sale not knowing anything about it or the author- and I can honestly say it was one of the best books I have ever read! Towards the end of the book, I literally could not put it down- every free moment I had I had to read it. It was so engaging, it really made sense and came together at the end. I felt like I wanted to start all over and read it again- and to have that happen to me with a book is quite rare.

this book is creepy.. and the villain is perfectly has all quality to be hated, physically, mentally and emotionally. The main character is interesting, a young beautiful blind woman, will make every reader feel sympathy for her. but the ending is pretty much predictable,so much for five hours reading. dah!

This is a very intriguing premise for a thriller, a blind woman with a psychic ability to read the last 18 seconds of a person's memory after they have died.
Some shortcuts were taken by the author to end the story, but not enough so to keep me from trying him again.
The psychic helps people with closure, helps archeologists find treasure, helps police find killers. One in particular is on the loose after being incarcerated for 30 years and is now 'rehabilitated' from his crime of dr More...

This was a really good thriller and my first read by this author. I enjoyed the fact that the story took place in my home state of New Jersey. I also loved the heroine Sherry Moore whose blindness didn't keep her from solving the crime with Lt. Shaugnessy. A wonderful edge of your seat thriller.

Mostly a 4 because it's a debut novel and I think if he continues along this path, he'll soon rate all 5s as an author. Really well done and gripping. I especially like that the blind woman is not a caricature or a super hero, although she is amazingly determined. Can't wait for more!

ATING: 3.0
WHY: A blind woman has the ability to see the last 18 seconds of a person’s life when she touches them, which comes in quite handy for homicide situations. An interesting premise which was under-developed. Pretty standard fare other than that hook.

Thirty years ago Earl Sykes landed in prison after a traffic accident that turned deadly. Now he has cancer and only a short time to live and he's planning to get his revenge. He returns to his previous MO, kidnapping young women and killing them.

This WAS an absurd premise, but I was determined to read it. After the first few pages I actually found myself enjoying it and by the time I had finished it, I was happy I had read it. It was even a little frightening!

When I looked at the cover of this CD I thought it was Cate Blanchett and anything that Cate chooses I am down with. Turns out it is not her and I liked this a lot anyhow. I always love listening to a good thriller when I am driving and this one saw me through a work commute that took twice as long as normal in 5 inches of snow. I will be on the lookout for more in this series.

Kristie says: This is a riveting novel about a woman who has the 'gift' to see the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life, and uses this gift to help out her friend who is a homicide detective.

Interesting concept in the first book with Sherry as the main character. However, the book moved away from Sherry's "strange ability" to the interweaving story line. Which most likely made the book more interesting.

Interesting storyline and idea but the plot itself fell short for me.
The constant transition between all the different characters detracted from the story more than anything.

I found the blind psychic's ability to "see" a dead person's last memories before dying to be a great twist! I hope to see Sherry in other Shuman books.

I absolutely loved this book, and I have to disagree with those that have said they didn't like the ending. The ending I found was not what I was expecting which is great when it comes to a book because 9 out of 10 times you can always tell what will happen. I hope the author writes a sequel to this book.

I'm a total sucker for thrillers like this. I read this in one evening and then didn't sleep the entire night, because I was completely on edge when I finished it.
It's almost a Lifetime Movie plot, except that Lifetime wouldn't go to this level. It's about a psychic blind woman who can see the last 18 seconds of the life of a corpse that she is allowed to have physical contact with, so obviously she is asked to help solve a murder case. I won't say anything more, because there a More...

Intriguing premise of a blind psychic who can "see" the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life. A series to watch.
