As the title suggests, this book is a how to guide for the new youth minister. It lays out the difficulties and struggles that you may face and how you should deal with them. Everything from how to deal with discouragement to building effective relationships, and from dealing with parents to leading a team. The author, Doug Feilds is a 25 year veteran of youth ministry. He has been through a lot, and he shares personal examples tendered with encouragement and advice from his heart for the "...more
After getting over my I-know-what-I'm-doing pride, I found that this book is a valuable resource for doing ministry the right way. It's not a step-by-step guide because those don't universally exist anyway. Rather, this book gives you lots to think about and is fluid enough for you to implement many of the principles in your own ministry. I've put what I've read into practice already, and it's proven itself.
Great resource for youth ministers, first two years or not. Fields covers some great issues related to doing youth ministry in a church. While giving a nod to volunteer leaders, Fields is really writing to professional youth leaders. With very few exceptions, I thought his advice was dead-on. Conversational. Easy to read. Clear application. Great book.

One of the best books out there for youth ministry. I recommend it for all youth ministers, not just the ones who are starting out. It has some great foundational principles, ideas, strategies, and core values that are essential to successful youth ministry.
Solid, practical advice from a veteran youth pastor. The first chapter is worth the price of the book. His warnings not to fall prey to the numbers game and to comparing yourself to others are exceedingly wise. I wish I could heed them more often.
Good practical advice. Nothing earth shattering. Chapter 4 is excellent--relationships are the most important thing. And Chapter 10 is good--How to evaluate your programs. Appendixes are very practical and helpful too.
A very good resource for those starting in ministry, and for those mentoring new youth workers. I've lost track of how often I've referred people to this book.
if you want some practical, ministry focused advice and counsel then you can turn to this book. I utilize it as an invaluable resource for reminding me what to do when "x" happens.
A must read for anyone in ministry especially within the 1st 2 years of youth ministry.

I LOVE YOU DOUG FIELDS!!! Thanks for writing this book and helping me equip for a new job!!! Your plans and ideas are sound and helpful! THANK YOU HAWK for giving this to me!!!! Do you want it back? (hehe)
This one's amazing. Speaking more to the heart of the minister rather than to the brain. Shows Doug's maturity from the time since he wrote PDYM.

Though I would classify this as read, I really only have referred to it. It is a great book for someone just starting out in it.
This was a good practical read on involving people in the ministries in the church.
An invaluable insight into youth ministry-- a must read for any pastor.
The author's arrogance made it torturous to read. I gave up.
great thoughts & tips on the first two years of youth ministry.
Every youth pastor should read this book and read it often.
