I'm finding this a little hard to review.

On the one hand, I loved it. The imagery was beautiful. The story was real and it mattered and it's history and at times I was so thoroughly IN the story I could nearly see what the characters did.

On the other hand, at times the heroine was too whiny for as brave as she was. The hero ... well, wasn't much of a hero. I don't like him much and can't see why she'd sell herself out for this guy who never proved himself worthy. The family relationships bothere

I loved Daphne and Paul but boy what a harrowing journey towards finally being together. The author painted a vivid picture of what war time romance must have been like. The hardships, the cruelty, the uncertainty. The historical references in this story were accurate, well researched and identical to what my Grandfather had told me about.The scenes in Singapore were as he had described them before he was captured and placed in Changi for more than 3 years. ‘A Mortal Sin’ is a lot more than just a romance. It has a real depth, and the details of the pre-war atmosphere in Singapore appear spot-on. I commend the author on her attention to detail, from the ‘Weeroona’ that took the couple from Melbourne to Queenscliff, to the correctly named towns around Wangaratta, and then, of course, to Singapore and the snobbery of the long-term white residents.
A couple of criticisms – I didn’t like the sudden jump in time between chapters 8 & 9, though it was

Margaret Tanner has won or been commended in competitions on several occasions.

As well as writing historical novels set in frontier Australia she has discovered a love for writing Western Romance.
