Well written story for middle-school, and even older readers. Relates the adventures and maturation of an 11 year old girl. Thoughtful, sensitive and,sometimes,comical,portrayal of her relationships.

Jean is the youngest of a group of kids that get together in a shed and call themselves the Hall of Heroes. Jean’s religion plays a huge part in the book. Because of her faith she volunteers to be a church helper and is assigned to a woman named Martha. The two plot points in this story are Jean visiting Martha and the Hall of Heroes being bullied by some older kids. This bullying becomes pretty physical at times. Jean, the youngest of a gang of friends in snowy Peabody Wisconsin, is sucked into trouble when her older brother and sister form "The Hall of Heroes." They appoint a membership (and Jean is last),and use a metal garden shed as their rendezvous point.

From the start, Eddy Reinbach and his two cronies hound the "Heroes" and interrupt their meetings with insults and snowball fights. War ensues, and the bullies win victory after victory. Can our Heroes survive?
