This is the first book I read by this author. It was okay. The first 1/3 of the book grabbed my attention. The main female character, Cleo, is a successful small business owner of an inn in Washington. Then she meets Max, the man in "The Mirror", and she becomes more naive in her thoughts and the comments she makes. I didn't like her as much after she met Max. There were some proofreading errors in the book too. A couple sentances would just end in mid-sentance and the next line in the book woul...more

There was about a 10 year gap between this book and the later All Night Long by the same author. Since I listened to the books back to back, it's interesting to see how JAK used the same background story for both heroines... the parents both died from an apparent murder-suicide and both heroines were unable to let the verdict stand and had to find ways to cope.

In All Night Long, the heroine became a reporter. In Grand Passion, the heroine wrote a book. Not just any sort of book, mind you, an "er...more

Perfectly acceptable contemporary romance with a bit of a mystery/suspense plot thrown in. As usual with JAK the characters were likable and the dialogue was good. I enjoyed the book for the most part and probably would give 4*s except for two things. One is silly but it did hinder my enjoyment - the hero's name is Max Fortune. Really? I kept flashing to the Simpson's episode where Homer changes his name to Max Power because he decides what's holding him back from success is the name Homer Simps...more

3.5*

Grand Passion was a mixed bag for me. Parts of the story, like the romance with it's ties to the "man in the mirror," were well done and unique. I liked the main characters and the small crowd of secondary characters involved in the inn, even though I felt the "new age" references dated the book. The dialog between Cleo and Max was well done, as well as the conversations between the "the family" group at the inn. They had an authentic feel to them.

What wasn't unique was the mystery surroundi...more

"Grand Passion" is written by Jayne Ann Krentz, which tells it's comtemporary romance. And as usual for this author it has a mistery twist in it, which makes it even more likeable ;)

So we meet Max first and he's admiring his collection of things he collects. And these are the things that don't make him suffer and don't reject him - unlike people in his past.

And then we see Cleo, a kind hearted woman, with a great potential to love. And with her he finds his family - a thing, he's never had. But...more

3-7-2009: This was the first JAK I ever read. I got it from the library 14 years ago, and I've been collecting JAK ever since, not to mention re-reading all of the 135 books I have managed to get my hands on so far. This reading was at least the fourth for this one. It remains one of my favorites. The characters are phenomenal, the dialogue quick and entertaining, and the suspense better than most of her others, although I do not read JAK for the suspense alone, or I wouldn't be re-reading all h...more

I wasn't satisfied with the story.

It's about Max Fortune who was searching for his Luttrells which is given to him by Jason, his mentor and the person he treats as a father. Jason direct him to get his Luttrells to Cleopatra, the one who owns the Robbin's Nest Inn. At first, he suspects her hiding his paintings but as soon as he found that she's innocent, he was already attracted to her. She has been waiting for him. 'Till one day, Cleo receives notes which seems like a threat. Max was alarmed an...more

I really enjoyed this novel especially all the inside references about being a writer and the business of publishing. I love it when she does that. It tickles my funny bone.

The story has a lot of action, twists and relationship building. Again, we do have the withdrawn brooding male hero and the outgoing extraverted heroine. It's a fun read and I love seeing how elements appear in the author's other books.

This is my favorite Krentz novel and one of my top five romance novels. Yes, it's pretty dated, but it has all the elements that make up a Krentz novel and I think this book covers all those elements the best. Quirky heroine, slightly dark, emotionally unaccessable, ridiculously successful businessman hero, the family you make vs the family you're born with (which usually are pretty awful, according to Krentz). I happen to love Max the most of any of Krentz's heroes and I like the "family" Cleo'...more

Abridged Pulp Romance/Mystery from my pile of free audio books. Fans of Krentz's say this is one of her best. One of the mysteries was way too obvious and the romantic encounters were too detailed so I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and won't waste my time reading anything else by her.

A romantic suspense novel by a master. Nothing original, but reads easily and fast. One of those books that I reread occasionally when I hit a reading rut. It lifted my mood, granted me a few hours of oblivion, and prepared me to try a new novel again.

This was my first book by this author. Admittedly, I only read it as part of a reading challenge.

As far as romances go, this was on the lower end. I don't really like suspenseful romances where there's some mystery or danger to be figured out. And the romance between Max and Cleo didn't always come off as believable.

On the plus side, this book was pretty easy to read and I wasn't bored with it at all. And I love novels that have the being-rich-won't-make-you-happy theme. And there was a happy...more

I was really in the mood to buy a book at BN and I decided to get a nice romantic suspense book. I picked this one up and it sounded really interesting. It had a touch of paranormalcy in it and also had great sexual tension and action.

This one was pretty good - interesting and likeable characters who were a little more dimensional than usual, the writing was good, and plot fairly well-developed and well-paced. If this is typical of Krentz's writing, I'd recommend her to patrons who like some "depth" to their romances, with a storyline to go with the sex scenes which weren't incredibly steamy but weren't too curtained either.

This was the first Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick book I read many years ago. It's still by far, my favorite!

Romance Fluff, but I enjoyed it :)

One of my favorite Jayne Ann Krentz novels.

There are many parts to this book, but two of my all time favorites are when Mr. Tobias Quinton's gang of Manly Warriors checks into the Inn (Outrageous), and when Max and Ben go into a hardware store (priceless). This one is a keeper for me, and every time I read it, it is good for lots of chuckles.

Narrated by Richard Ferrone

Ferrone is not a favorite narrator for me but he did fairly well with this 1994 audiobook.

Krentz is, and always will be, a comfort read for me, I know the basics of what I'm going to get going in and I enjoy the new twists and turns she adds along the way.

Standard JAK. Cleo has made a new family for herself at her inn and when Max shows up looking for his inheritance from his mentor, he finds something better than paintings, once he lets himself feel. The subplot with the Curzon hotel chain had some rocky points, but otherwise it was all good.
