When reading Henry Hoffman's Adam Fraley mystery/detective books you forget you are reading fiction. Henry weaves his stories together like a fine cable sweater taking you through twists and turns mixing historical fact and regional history with a cast characters that keep you thinking about them long after you finish the books. "On A Midnight Clear" is Hoffman's third Adam Fraley mystery that takes place at Christmas time in Colorado ( I know what my "bookies" are getting for gifts this year!) ...more

I like to read Florida-based novels because that's where I live. I had also read the first Fraley mystery, Bridge to Oblivion, which I liked, so I was interested to see this next one. I enjoyed following the story line from tropical Southwest Florida to bitter cold Siberia. The author includes good detail about traveling by railway in Siberia, the fishing culture, the golomyanka fish, legends about frozen ice maidens, etc. A criminal cop and an earnest detective are trying to outwit each other, ...more

I won The Veiled Lagoon: An Adam Fraley Mystery by Henry Hoffman from Goodreads. The story is a Private Investigator mystery. P.I. Adam Fraley is hired to investigate a death that has already been ruled accidental. His search for the truth takes him from Florida to Russia and back again.
At first I felt there was not enough character development, but I soon began to feel familiar with each character's ways of interacting with other characters. Also, at times I thought of the plot, "This is too ea

I won this book in a goodreads Firstreads drawing.

It's a PI mystery featuring Adam Fraley, a neophyte detective based in Tampa. He gets involved in the murder of the wife of Russian American police detective.

While the novel contains some good ideas, they never quite reach their potential. Fraley, the protagonist, never really comes alive. The Glastnost era setting never quite seems real. The antagonist is very interesting, but the author can't quite reach the levels of madness required.

I like Adam Fraley and hope to read more of his exploits. I found this book just the right length and full of interesting literary and scenic facts. Looking up places and books mentioned in the books I read brings the stories to life. This was an interesting story that followed Adam Fraley as he traveled from Florida to Russia and back. Had an unexpected twist toward the end. Keep up the writing Mr.Hoffman. Thank you Goodreads for the free book.

I love PI stories and stories with a strong sense of place. This book is both. Interestingly, this story has two places: southern Florida and Siberia. The author effectively weaves the two places together. I think I missed the first book in the series (there are references to past events in this book) and I look forward to the next in the series.

I was lucky to receive this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

Thank you for "The Veiled Lagoon" by Adam Fraley . It is the first of his books that I have read. and I enjoyed it. I found it great to follow him to Siberia and back a great story in his effort to see justice done to this devious rogue cop. The pace was lively and details well planned. I expect to see more of his new assistant in new investigations to come. Ann Curran

The Veiled Lagoon was an interesting mystery. It was different from other mysteries I've read in that you know who committed the crime in the beginning of the book. The rest of the book unfolds to try to prove the crime. I very much enjoyed the information in the book on Russia and Ukraine. I received the The Veiled Lagoon for free through Goodreads First Reads.

A interesting detective story. In this book you know who did it from the beginning and the rest of the book figuring out how to prove it. It was a nice change of pace usually it is the other way around. The authors details of places makes you almost feel the snow or the sand depending on the part of the book you are at.

I won this book through goodreads.
