Maybe I'm biased because I've read Mandela's autobiography, to which any other accord of his long walk to freedom will pale in comparison. That said, I only moderately enjoyed this snapshot of Mandela's later life (1990-1995). I think much of my apathy for this read is due to John Carlin's often hyperbolic manner of storytelling. Was apartheid an evil, hateful system? Absolutely. However Carlin's sensational view of Afrikaners is not only subjective, but borders on racial profiling. Then again, ...more

HERMOSO, EMOTIVO, INSPIRADOR.

A very interesting book about Mandela, the author was clearly a great admirer of Mandela and came to know him in his years as President and afterwards. It was something of a miracle what Mandela achieved without much knowledge by others. I sincerely hope South Africa will benefit more from Mandela's legacy and that all parts of the population come together and help the country move forward.

Awesome portrait of a great leader

I became interested in Mandela after seeing Invictus the movie. This book was advertised to me by bookbub at an extremely low price on the Kindle version, and I couldn't resist. I'm so glad that I bit. Brilliant little book! I may have to find physical hard copy for my library. Think of this book as an introduction to the man. The author is a journalist who came to know Mandela personally, and like most people (we learn) who met the great leader in person became

A little gem of a book, beautifully written in Carlin's lucid style. He shows a deep understanding of a man who is seen by many as a saint, and while his admiration is obvious, he makes a strong point of Mandela's pragmatism and strategy in saving South Africa from chaos and civil war. Mandela's saintliness lay in his forgiveness; his genius lay in his understanding of the 'enemy' and what needed to be done in order to win them over and so to prevent a future of further destruction. His personal ...more

a must read story about an incredible man

A man like Gandhi and MLK that peacefully a turn about from oppression. He story told by a man that knew Mandela personally rather than by research about the man. Mandela, a man who could have hated his white oppressors and jailers who used love, kindness and his powerful personality to change his country.

This one is tough to read. It is a good read, but I already had read most of it in his other book "Playing the Enemy" and it is quite short. I liked "Playing the Enemy" better, but if you want more of a biography, this one might be better.

A modest though deeply moving book that captures the essence of it's magnificent subject, Nelson Mandela.

This book made me cry quite a few times, once in Mugg & Bean and then in the parking lot waiting for my colleague! It is an amazing story of a history I never even knew! I never understood why the AWB bombed out quite as much as it did. How Mandela brought everyone together blows my mind!
Norberto Verino
Sampada
This is simply a very flattering encomium written by a journalist who was obviously very captivated by the charm Mandela was known to have. Not to say the latter didn't deserve it. Mandela did change a lot of things in South Africa and played a very major role in shaping up the country.

To sum it up: it's a good starter book in understanding the Mandela legacy. Not in any way comprehensive.
