I love to be scared and suspended in a state of heebie-jeebies. I crave the dread, succumbing to the paranoia and to that always elusive (but much desired) sensation of epic creep. I don't mind when authors reach for the gross out (that's all fine for a good bit of schlocky fun); but where horror's beating heart really lies -- where it lives and breathes in the darkened shadows -- is in the dread and creep. That's how it all began with Gothic fiction. Those are its roots baby, and on some primal

I discovered this book completely by accident and for some reason it begged me to read it and I'm so glad I did. I was hooked from the very first few pages and left at the end with a satisfied twist that keeps me thinking about it (the hallmark of a good book in my opinion).

I Remember You is a chilling thriller come ghost story based partly on a true story and written originally in Icelandic by the author, Yrsa Sigurdardottir (please don't ask me to pronounce it!) it has been translated into En
I Remember You is a chilling, suspenseful ghost story, written in the style of a Scandinavian thriller. The plot is built several strange, seemingly unrelated mysteries, which are slowly uncovered and investigated by a psychiatrist, named Freyr, in the town of Isafjördur; the disappearances of two children decades apart, a peculiar suicide of an elderly woman and the mysterious vandalism of a school. There is so much going on in this book, including numerous revelations and twists to keep the pl ...more
Wavered between 3 and 4 stars. Ultimately I went with 3 because I was disappointed by aspects of the characterisation and didn't find the conclusion of the book as successful or effective as the earlier parts. Still, there is much to enjoy here and I definitely liked this much more than the previous book I've read by Sigurðardóttir, The Day is Dark. That one was part of a crime series, whereas I Remember You is a standalone novel which is part horror story, part mystery. The central plot involve ...more

A 'Slow' Story!...

Finally, I'm finished with this book! I felt like I kept reading & reading it would just never end! I wanted to read this book because I really like Simone St. James and she gave this book 5 stars on GR. I figured since Simone knows how to write fantastic ghost stories then it must be good. Well that just goes to show you that everyone has different tastes and expectations. A 5 star review for one person, may be a 3 star review for someone else...

The rising sense of dread was unrelenting. The situation of the three people in the old house was particularly unleavened by any hope that things would improve. While not usually a fan of supernatural themes, I really enjoyed (if that's the right word) this one. Yrsa's plot sustained the tension throughout, with nothing being revealed prematurely or cluttered by extraneous detail.

She also presented the physical and psychological environment very effectively. People often come apart in enforced i

I do not recall enjoying a thriller / crime novel as much as this for a very long time. Further, on these early autumnal Cumbrian nights I must say that I was concerned by the atmosphere and elements of terror that Yrsa conjured up in remote Iceland - in a good way of course. That is after all, why I read this stuff.

Two story lines run alongside each other, to which the link becomes apparent only later in the book. The remote island setting has elements of a good ghost story at times, Poe-esque

I did like the setting (remote village, only accessible by boat, in the cold and dark Icelandic winter), the story itself is decent, overall it was a pretty good read.

However, there is a lot to be desired. The writing is not all that gripping, and several times I caught myself skipping whole paragraphs while waiting for the author to "get to the point already". There is a lot of background exposition, but at least 50 % of that has no relation to the story, and doesn't serve for character buildin

O frio, o branco, os ...more
Yrsa Sigurðardóttir has easily become one of my favorite Scandinavian crime authors. Her unexpected plot twists are both original and suspenseful. Much like my other favorite Icelandic author Arnaldur Indriðason, she deftly inserts the desolate, harsh beautiful of Iceland's landscape into her stories. Her first several books follow Thóra Guðmundsdóttir's crime-solving adventures in and around Reykjavik, but 'I Remember You' is a stand-alone story. Whereas her other stories feature corny humor an ...more

Tuto schopnost si udržela i v první knize bez své ikonické hrdiny Tóry.

Abandoned this book. I think either the translation was bad or the writing was bad. To me, it read very flat and lifeless. Just not for me, I guess.

I Remember You caused me to see shadows everywhere in my house, no matter how many lights I turned on, and I turned on a-plenty while reading this novel. If not for the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge, I'd not have selected a book in the horror genre. Because horror. Especially novels. A movie is done in 2 hours. A book takes over my life.

So when you read a novel you wouldn't select for yourself in a genre you don't care for, and it makes you very uncomfortable and you don't sleep well while you

This is a hybrid mystery/horror, set in Iceland and translated from Icelandic. The chapters alternate between the story of three people trying to renovate a haunted house in an abandoned village, and a divorced psychiatrist helping police investigate an incident of vandalism and trying to learn the fate of his missing son.

It was cleverly plotted, and the alternating chapters worked well, but the writing was pretty bad - or maybe the translation was bad. The characters had no depth. The mystery w

I am always in the market for a chilling ghost story and this is certainly a good one … part ghost story, part thriller. The setting – Iceland – makes it chilling in more ways than one.

As Katrin, her husband Garoar and their friend, Lif accompanied by her little dog, disembark from a boat onto the lonely island in the Icelandic Westfjords the captain warns them, not for the first time, that cell phone reception is sketchy at best and the weather can turn nasty in minutes as he again reminds them

Great haunting book
The story is based on two different viewpoints. One would be three characters - Garoer, Lif, and Katrin. Garoer and Katrin are married and are also good friends with Lif and her husband, who passed away recently. The three of them traveled by boat to a remote island in Iceland to renovate a house that is owned by Garoer.
The other viewpoint is a psychiatrist named Freyr who is contacted by the local police to investigate why a school was vandalized on the island. In addition, F

This is a fantastic old fashioned ghost story. All through this story you have this feeling, you know the one, where it is late at night and you go to bed and the dog comes in and curls up next to you. And just as you are about to doze off, the dog suddenly sits up, fully alert with his ears up, and his fur up a bit and maybe just a very low, short growl. You sit up and don't hear anything so you reach over to the dog, pet him a little and say "It's ok. Nothing there." The dog looks at you and p ...more
