Some things in this book I find a tad extreme, but I love the basic principle, which is that God created our bodies and He created food to nourish them. When we step outside His plan by eating foods He never intended, we reap the consequences in our health and our emotions.

This book made me very aware of the effect food has on my health and my ability to function. Since reading it, I've become much more particular about the foods I ingest and I attempt to eat foods as close as possibl...more

I took a lot from the book and left a bit that didn't apply. As a result of reading it, I no longer eat pork or shell fish. He does a great job at helping the reader see the practical nature of some of the Old Testament guidelines for eating and food preperation. A good book to learn about natural living. I learned the importance of removing toxins from my environment as well as my food. His story is amazing but too chronic for me to relate to. Overall, it's a great book. Each chapter can stand ...more

It's been awhile since I read this book. I remember learning a great deal at the time I read this. For one, I never thought of shellfish as being all that bad, but after reading this, I reduced my shellfish intake.

There was a lot of "do nots" in the book, if I can recall correctly. That does not appeal too much to me. Some of the recipes were very good, but took more time than I would've liked.

What happened to Jordan and the amazing transformation was very m...more

I could read the book up to a certain point. when he starts talking about how we should be eating 'dirt', ect he lost me. and that you should buy his supplements. Also, I question his strict adherence to the Old Testament. Leviticus chapter 11 lists the dietary restrictions God gave to the nation of Israel. The dietary laws included prohibitions against eating pork, shrimp, shellfish and many types of seafood, most insects, scavenger birds, and various other animals. The dietary rules were n...more

Very good. Picks apart processed food and focuses on eating only whole, real food. Uses the Jewish diet as a model for what / how humans are supposed to be eating. Touches on groups of people throughout the world that don't have the diseases the rest of us have because they naturally eat real food. Touches on why, in the last however many decades, disease in the US has skyrocketed (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). I went on the 40 day cleanse it talks about in the book. It was eye o...more

Interesting. . .Cuckoo!

It would be lovely to have a diet that would cure all intestinal ills and help everyone (whether currently over- or underweight) find and maintain a healthy weight, but this diet is a bit much for me. He lost JJ at eating enzymes extracted from dirt and lost me at "no pasta or bread for the rest of your life." I'm just not capable. He did, however, make a convincing argument for not eating pork (we're not big pork fans anyway, so it didn't take much) ...more

You can't argue with success, really, especially of the kind that the author has experienced. But still...the diet is very impractical for everyday life. Not the "don't eat pork or shellfish" part, but all of the other things that he expounded from the biblical text.

My husband tried it and calls it boot camp for your belly. He said it's very difficult to follow and that he did not feel better after the first few weeks at all.

And I'm always a bit skeptical of doc...more

My husband was "diagnosed," in quotations because I don't really like that word, with chronic colitis. Thus his mom gave us this book. It contains a wealth of great information regarding what to eat, and what not to eat. The author has an inspiring testimony. We have been on the diet for almost a month now and it has improved both of our healths. At times, I had to remind myself that this guy is a fanatic about overall health, only because he nearly didn't live to tell his story, ...more

The Maker's Diet isn't just another diet book. It is a wellness plan for life based mostly on the Bible. Jordan Rubin tells the fascinating story of his battle with Crohn's Disease and the diet that brought him back from the brink of death. The diet outlined in this book is the same diet that the Israelites lived on thousands of years ago. Didn't think the Bible had anything to say about the way we eat? Neither did I--until reading this book. In a world of fad diets, obesity, and massive consump...more

One major thing I didn't like about this book was that it claimed that it would show what the science was behind the diet that God prescribed to the Israelites in the Bible. I kept reading through all his babble waiting for the science part to come and it didn't. He also makes it one of the basic tenets of the diet to follow his "Clenzology" cleansing routine which involves cleaning under your fingernails and your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth--now where is that written in the Bible? It ...more

Has some good principles, but mixes it with utter hogwash and tries to falsely spiritualize the whole thing. Yes, eating whole foods is good. Yes, we often overprocess our food, and going back to a more natural, local diet will be better for our bodies. But does cutting out pork, catfish, and crab really change one's health all that much? Is coconut oil really the secret to long life? Did failure to chew his food enough really give Rubin Crohn's disease?

Besides the technical dif...more

The nutritional information in this book is right on. Unfortunately I can't give it more that 3 stars because of the way that Rubin attempts throughout the book to exploit for profit the miraculous healing that God gave him. His story is amazing, but I wish he didn't make a product line out of it. I highly recommend the nutritional advice presented though.

Thank you to my Pastor Mike Edwards for giving me this book! It is full of useful info. and facts pertaining to preventative illness. Puts diet into a perspective that I can follow and understand without feeling like my whole life revolves around my next meal. Absolutely the best book on nutrition that I have read.

This was a helpful book. And the recipes in the back were delicious and energizing! I do however, disagree with the whole pork thing. Its not the most healthy meat, but I believe that it is clear in the New Testament that it is no longer unclean, so any argument against eating it based on the Bible is inaccurate.

This is an excellent explanation of the way that God designed us to eat for long-term weight maintenance and excellent health. The only thing I don't like about it is how Rubin promotes his own products which are way more expensive than comparable products out there.

I learned SO much about the human body and how it interacts with the food we eat from this book. It was a good balance to Michael Pollan's "In defense of food".
The only bad part is that he's trying to sell supplements. I just ignored that stuff.

This is a diet that I firmly believe in, after reading Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions. It requires a major life style change, so some people will be turned off. But, you can make very small changes, and it still will make a difference. 1) I stopped buying boxed cereal and replaced it with organic eggs and whole oats. 2) I stopped buying minute white rice and replaced it with brown rice. 3) I stopped buying skim milk and replaced it with raw goat's milk from a local farm. 4) I stopped ...more

You don't have to follow all the supplements and format he does. Just good information about how we should stop eating boxed stuff and ferment or sprout our grains, eat raw (but clean) dairy, etc. Goes well with Nourishing Traditions cook book.

I found this so intriguing since I have Ulcerative Colitis. It's nice to relate to someone. I am of course skeptical, but desperate for relief so I am going to try this diet and see if it can indeed heal me the way it healed the author.
Jen Mcpherson
The coconut milk soup is delish. The rest of it seemed like good advise, if a bit fanatical. I could not follow it for more than a few days. If you're going to try the green food supplement he recommends- get the capsule form.
Caitlin
This book was absolutely fascinating. It presented a way of eating from a Biblical perspective. It really makes a person think about what is actually going into their mouth and how much food actually can affect our lives. I learned a lot that I didn't know and will have to read it again and take notes to remember a lot of it. Still... It's quite fascinating! I recommend it to anyone who's looking to be healthier!

I learned that when we use Biblical wisdom, we can change our eating habits. By eating foods that are nutritionally nourishing, we will feel and look better. People perish from because of lacking knowledge; Dr. Rubin's book tells readers how to make food choices that will add to one's life. Getting off of the junk food and fast food merry-go-round and getting onto healthy, good tasting food will be of great benefit physically. Tasty menus and shopping sources are bonuses plus they help

Dr. Rubin Jordan spells exactly what you need to know to heal any type of digestive problem that may inflict you, all it takes is a bit of education in making specific healthy food choices.

I agree with most of this book. Great discussion on how food was meant to be consumed & how strongly it relates to your relationship w/ god. Good recipe ideas at the end of the book.

Absolutely my favorite way to eat. I feel GREAT when I follow this. Wonderful, and Rubin's personal story is inspiring and fascinating. Even better is the Great Physicians Rx.

I think there is a lot of truth in this book about God's design in how we should eat nutritionally. I will credit this book in sparking some interest in going back to school.

I don't look like I need a diet, but my body loved the 2 week cleansing routine. It was pretty painless compared to alot of other diets we had been on and I could really feel a difference in my energy and health. The biggest change was getting off cearl for breakfast and having protein. That removed my morning slump and increased my thinking abilities. We'lve also adopted several other habits lake raw honey, less junk food (although that creeps in cycles now. We try to return to the 2 week c...more

This one gets two stars simply because he provides some real information in here. My son was diagnosed with life threatening food allergies a few days after his second birthday. I honestly didn't know what to buy for several months. While this book panders to religious people, it gave me some food ideas that were previously beyond me. It also claims to clear up where anti-Semitic behavior started. As with most books in this self-help genre, you have to wade through a bunch of crap to take a...more

This diet was frustrating because it was very hard finding these weird and rare ingriedients in the store. I agree that this diet is way too extreme.
