Recommends it for: Anyone fascinated by Australia
“Cobbers”; I picked this book up, unthinkingly wondering why anyone would have deemed a book of recipes for baked sponge over fruit (cobbler), to be marketable? On opening the front cover, I was charmed by a quaint pen & ink map of Australia, decorated with animals, aboriginals, and squiggly scripted place-names.

The title page enlightened me: “COBBER”: Australian slang, COMPANION, MATE. From the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary”. On glancing at the page third from last I read of
