History - long ennobled as the privileged domain of lofty scholars and erudite minds - really just boils down to four things if you think about it. Who killed who, who conquered who, who slept with who, and in what order. Humanity's story, properly told, is every bit as bawdy as a sailor's yarn, as juicy as a Mills & Boon, as real and relevant as a night on the town wi ...more

Slimed by history is my reaction/proposal for the real title of the book. What a waste of my time! I did enjoy bits and pieces of the book... but the author was sloppy. He chose to ruin an interesting subject by inserting his sarcastic sense of humor into the historical details... so now I'm not sure what was genuine fact... and what was mere showcase for Mr. Powell's wit. It's a pity the author was such a egomaniac because he was witty and if he had only taken more care with the book, he might ...more

I've been reading this over the last couple of months - a page or two or ten each night. It's based on fact, though one can't tell precisely where facts are deviated from, but who cares?! I love the humour of it - a mixture of clever and "low" and it has amused me greatly.

Lowbrow is quite right, it was good for some chortles though. The author is a wee bit too proud of his wit, and several parts were forced. Several parts repeat old chestnuts, like Nero fiddling while ROme burned, and a few places were frankly made up, but those moments were silly enough to recognize as such.

Although I gleaned some interesting historical anecdotes, this book is quite crass. Who could have guessed from the title, eh?

I found this book to be quite funny, but, to be honest, I'm not sure how historically accurate it is. So, if you're more concerned with history, you might not like this book. But if you like a good laugh of the frat boy variety, by all means, crack it open. By the way, this was clearly written by a dude. Anyway, I'm sure there is some truthiness to this ... maybe it'll help me out on Jeopardy! (one day, Alex Trebek, one day...)

Tongue in cheek view on the promenent subject in history. Already has the knowledge beforehand, nothing new. Context written almost Chav-like...

My favorite chapters were, Fat Chicks: A Historical Perspective and Ugly People Throughout the Ages. A brief history of defication however was not breif enough. Extremely lowbrow!
