Wilson should have just walked away when three men came looking for a way to boost a valuable piece of art. But the heist was more than just a job for Wilson; it was a chance to get off the sidelines and back in the game.

The art came off the wall, the alarm screamed thief, and Wilson walked away clean. But it turned out that job was an interview for an even bigger heist. A

In The Buffalo Job, the fifth effort by Mike Knowles in his Wilson series, Knowles shows he’s not growing soft, or even slightly sympathetic to Wilson, the former mob enforcer who just can’t quite get his life back together. Exhaustion, pain, mayhem and death travel with Wilson. Corpses and battered people litter the way behind him.

Wilson has a weak moment and finishes a job stealing a work of art for some young gangsters after they failed at the same job that he’d planned for them. One was a ne

Gritty and bloody is the only way to describe this series and The Buffalo Job has it in spades.

What I liked: I love Wilson and I really shouldn't. I can't believe I'm hooked on a series where the lead is basically a pretty bad person. I guess that's the gift of Mr. Knowles' writing. I would never have thought I would like a book of this type until I read the previous book, Never Play Another Man's Game. I've become invested in Wilson even as I'm appalled by the majority of his actions. It's almo

I received an ARC (advanced reader’s copy) of this book via a goodreads.com giveaway. Since I had never read a Wilson Mystery, or anything written by Mike Knowles, I had no idea what to expect. The first thing that struck me was what a great author this person was. The descriptive quality was amazing. I figured I would read a few pages and finish some research I was in the middle of completed. Before I knew it, I was finding that I was nearing the end of the book.

While I rarely read books where

I have never read a Mike Knowles book before, and I am glad I took the time to read this one. The story is about a man named Wilson who fixes things or helps other criminals get what they need. He does not do the job himself. But after listening to three young men he decides he could do the job in one afternoon. After breaking his own rule and doing the job in less than a day. He is offered a job with more money but also more risk. He takes the job but he also has to work with three other guys ...more

Someone please tell me how Knowles' name isn't coming up more when we talk about great series that are currently being written. This is the 5th book in the Wilson series and the 5th great book that Knowles has penned. This book sees Wilson teaming up with a small crew to steal a valuable instrument and we see how deadly and astute he is as he tackles any criminal job he is on. I think Knowles would be wise to find a publisher that would put his name out more than in currently is. I stumbled onto ...more

I'm not sure if I have read any of the previous Wilson books "blood soaked noir crime thrillers", about a gangster from the Toronto/Hamilton area (where the author is from). I may have read "Grinder" before. This one is a bit strange, particularly since I'm not familiar with what Wilson had done in the previous 4 books. I gather they all have strange twists and brutal endings, with Wilson ultimately surviving the 'job' with all its' twists and turns, by using all his wits and being willing to ...more

Wilson is a former enforcer-turned-planner of thefts (at $5000 a pop). When he actually carries out a clever theft for three young wanna-be gangsters who botched it (a museum heist) earlier, he finds himself suborned into stealing a much more expensive item for a gangster who is no wannabe. Wilson talks very tough, and thinks even tougher. He is a very dangerous man surrounded by other dangerous men. Double-crosses abound in his rather bleak world. This book is the fifth in a series, so I'll ...more

A somewhat unusual book in that a criminal/conman/”fixer” is the protagonist (and it's written in the first person). The story begins with a very clever theft of an art gallery painting in Toronto. It moves on to a contract for a different theft, a rare violin, in Buffalo. It is violent and bloody, with a number of murders (some of them good guys), but there is a lot of humour. The author writes in a wry style which I enjoyed.

You won't find much in terms of Buffalo landmarks or landscape. However, it was gritty and the Wilson character was compelling because his mind is always whirring away.
