An international bestseller since 1992, this is a humorous look at what makes up one of the world's most colorful characters: the Carioca--those charming inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, written by a U.S. native who has made Rio her home for more than thirty-eight years. If you dream of blending in with the locals while visiting Rio, help is at hand. Natives of Rio have a u

Not a bad easy read for the plane ride to the place. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a light read before your trip to Rio

How To Be a Carioca is an awesome blend of dark humor and information on the culture, language, and life in Rio de Janeiro; information that you would not find in any normal guidebook. I also find it very interesting that the author is American by birth but has lived most of her life in Rio de Janeiro, as a real Carioca (resident of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).

This is a tongue-in-cheek description of various social and cultural aspects of life in Rio, with "helpful tips" on how gringos like us (fore

It was fun reading this book about people I've lived with for almost a year. A lot of the funny stuff in this book look like a stereotyping thing but guess what, you will definitely find out that those Cariocas, the people of Rio de Janeiro, will be always the first to start those stereotypes about themselves and would agree with most of what is in this book. The humor in this book is acceptable and would make you laugh very loud reading a "light" text written with care supported with good ...more

This little book is really funny!
I've read it when I was staying in Rio de Janeiro for several months and everything is absolutelly true. If you know Rio it is hilarious, but also if this city is new for the reader it will give you a good insight of Brazilian culture and for sure it will make you laugh.

I find this little book a gem. Not only does it provide you with information that is useful, but I love the humorous writing style with a touch of kind irony. The only problem is that after reading it I wish I was in Rio already, but unfortunately that has to the meantime I am happy to have this book to bring me closer to what it feels like being in Rio.

It's touristic guide for the city of Rio de Janeiro
written in pleasurable way and extremely smooth for reading
unlike other touristic guides.

However, some information are outdated and others are exaggerated.
