A canção

A canção, expressão da melancolia, do amor, do entusiasmo, só morrerá se estes sentimentos morrerem; ela é, como o suspiro, como o grito, um dos movimentos naturais da alma.

Os tristes, os deserdados, os pobres, os oprimidos, quando tudo lhes falta, o pão, o lume, o vestido, têm sempre, no fundo da alma, uma cantiga pequena que os consola, que os aquece, que os alegra. É a última coisa que fica no pobre. E então a cantiga vale mais do que todos os poemas.
