Lillian Stewart Carl – 9th book (Gothic)
Amanda Witham enjoys wearing the eighteenth century garb while working as a tour guide at Williamsburg, Virginia's Melrose House. When archeologists discover two-century-old bones in the nearby garden, Amanda received visits from the ghost of James Grant who persuades her to uncover the truth about his untimely death. Upon traveling to Scotland Amanda finds herself embroiled in his past that could lead to her present demise. *** Altho
The subtitle kind of sums it up. Set in Colonial Williamsburg of today. Follows one of the "interpreters" who is also the caretaker of an 18th century house. A skeleton is dug up from the archaeological site behind the house, and soon Amanda is being haunted by a handsome Scottish ghost. She is even allowed to travel with his bones as they are sent to be buried in his ancestral home. Except he doesn't want that--he wants revenge on his murderer--who of course is long dead!

Bizarre book! But a fun

I really enjoyed this book! The story takes place in present time with the location shifting between Williamsburg, VA and Scotland. The combination of history, murder and a ghost makes for a very good read.

We meet Amanda, a graduate student, when she is working as caretaker/reenactor for one of Williamsburg's historic houses. When a body is unearthed in the yard, the ghost of long-dead James arrives. Lillian Stewart Carl brings the reader a cast of characters that are entertaining and likeable,

Shadows in Scarlet is a ghost story, among other things, a sub-genre I rarely read because it can be difficult to handle well. Stewart Carl handles it with aplomb. The premise was intriguing and believable, and the ghost both charming and chi ...more

A historian heroine, working in reenactment, who just happens to encounter an actual ghost - seemingly a heroic ghost - in her house? With that setup, I should have loved this book. Unfortunately the ghost story turned more creepy than Gothic, and by the time the plot moved to Scotland, I just wanted it to be over.
