Uncle Bobby's Wedding tells the sweet story of Chloe, a young guinea pig who worries that Uncle Bobby won’t keep having fun with her after he marries his boyfriend Jamie. Uncle Bobby explains that their special times together will not end; Chloe will not be losing an uncle, but gaining one. The book ends at the wedding, with Chloe as the enthusiastic flower girl. Though this book has a total feel good message and focuses on the truth behind a homosexual relationship, two people who just love ea

A little girl (guinea pig? hamster? I honestly don't know, but I think they're guinea pigs) is upset because her favorite Uncle, Bobby, is getting married, and she's afraid he won't have time for her anymore. Turns out, Uncle Bobby is marrying Jamie, who is also male, so she's not losing an uncle, she's gaining another uncle.
I noticed the "Family Matters" shelf in the children's section of my local library. It had a few books on same-sex marriage, so I read 'em. I wasn't impressed with any of t More...

A story of a young guinea pig (I think?) whose favorite uncle is getting married. Chloe is upset because she worries that her special relationship with Bobby will be gone when he's married and says "but you have me." Bobby and Jamie work together to help Chloe know that when they're married she'll still be special to them and will now have *two* special uncles. It was really very sweet. I did find it confusing/weird that all the male guinea pigs were black and white (or grey), and

Summary: Chloe has a special relationship with her Uncle Bobby, and she worries that will change when he gets married.
Response: I found this book on The Rainbow List - had I not, I my have dismissed it as an "authentic" and respectful book about two gay men. It is the first book in this course where I have read an animal story, since I had been trying to avoid cute animal versions of other people's cultures. Chloe is having a hard time with her favorite uncle's upcoming marriage. Her Uncle Bobby and soon to be Uncle Jamie show her how much they both love her and how much fun they will have together. The author does a fantastic job in telling this valuable story.

Chloe's favorite uncle, Bobby, is going to get married to Jamie, and Chloe worries Bobby won't have time for her anymore. A good book for someone interested in a picture book about a same sex marriage.

A cute little story that, although labeled as a "gay" book, is about more than just that. It deals with an issue that a good number of children may have to deal with: their favorite/dearest adult figure is getting married and the child fears they will be left behind. Chloe loves her uncle Bobby. So, when Bobby announces he is getting married to Jamie, naturally, Chloe is worried. This is another very nice, heartwarming book for children. Sure, the two uncles are gay, but they just happ

This is a charming story about a young girl, er, guinea pig who becomes concerned when she discovers that her beloved uncle is getting married. Will he still spend time with her? Luckily, Uncle Bobby isn't about to forget his favorite niece.
How could this kind of storyline concern some folks? Well, it seems Uncle Bobby is marring another male guinea pig. What is so wonderful--and controversial to some--about this story is that the same-sex marriage seems matter of fact. I look forwa More...

Cute story about a little girl (okay, she's actually a hamster) who is sad that her Uncle Bobby is getting married; why does he have to get married when he already has her? The thing that sets this book apart from the many other children's books of similar plot is that Uncle Bobby is getting married to Jamie, another man (okay, fine... he's a hamster!!) The same-sex marriage is handled well and everyone is happy, which is actually appropriate for the target age. Still, this is not one I'll be us

I find this book utterly touching and truly a great way to explain to kids the reason people get married, even in general. I love that it is gerbils as characters. All you really see is the relationship of the little girl and her uncle, and how they explain the idea of him getting married because he wants to have a family. There is no further explanation because it is two guys, which makes this all the easier to explain children. Definitely one, I will want to read to my own niece and nephew

This was on a recent "challenged library book" list, so of course I had to get a copy from the library. What probably set some people's hair on fire was the titular wedding having two grooms and none of the characters blinks an eye. The conflict comes from Chloe, who fears this wedding means she won't get to spend time with her favorite uncle. She's assured that she'll actually be gaining an additional uncle who is pretty cool, too. Cute story.

How appropriate that I discovered this book as California is heading to the polls to vote on whether or not to ban gay marriage. All those opposed to equality should be forced to read this children's book. Instead of being solely about finding out a relative is gay, this book is about feeling left out or behind. Chloe finds out her favorite uncle is getting married. She feels that she will no longer be a part of her uncle's life. Chloe talks with her uncle and is brought into his and his partner

This picture book, written for younger audience, expresses the concerns that most children have when someone gets married. Such as: “How do I fit in?” and “Will that person still have time for me?” Little Chloe is relieved to discover that not only is she gaining a wonderful Uncle Jaime, but she Uncle Bobby loves her and is here to stay. The playful illustrations and Guinea Pig characters will make this a book that young children can understand and enjoy. Children in this situ More...

Here's another sweet tale of an alternative guinea pig family that has been banned/challenged from some libraries. The book is beautifully illustrated but needs a little bit more in the plot with regards to the guinea pig marriage if this book is to be about teaching young children it's ok to be in a family with same sex couples since it seems to be lacking some emphasis. Otherwise this is a cute, simple story.

An ok children's book about a young hamster (or maybe guinea pig, I wasn't sure) who is nervous about her uncle Bobby marrying his boyfriend Jamie. While the themes are laudable, some of the writing made me groan and the theme really isn't marriage, it is welcoming a new person into your family. If that is what you are looking for, you might enjoy it, but it is really nothing special.

ometimes you luck out and get a two-fer with a review. When Brian reviewed Mini Mia, he also mentioned Uncle Bobby's Wedding. Now I want to read them both. I subsequently saw Lee Wind's review. I may have mentioned it before, but I think Lee has some of the most insightful, poignant reviews in the kidlitosphere.

Mixed feelings here. I found the storyline to be a little bit of a rip off of another book published earlier Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding. It is also a bit strange to see the whole story be about guinea pigs. Why not real people? I am happy to see diversity, but it is not my favorite. Much preferred In Our Mothers'House.

Another one I picked up because it was on the "challenged" list. I am very open-minded, but this story gave me the creeps. I did not read it to my pre-k child. That said, I do not think it should be banned (or challenged) simply because I do not believe in censorship.

i feel like i should champion any kid's book about queer weddings, even queer guinea pig weddings. but, this treacly book doesn't have the edginess of king & king, nor the veracity of and tango makes three. plus, uncle bobby's partner is frequently wearing a lavender vest. lavender? it's already apparent that he's queer. don't have to beat us over the head with it. plus what girl knows how to tie a bow-tie? honestly. 1% of the male population know this secret. the author does get extra

A very sweet, subtle story about a little girl guinea pig, Chloe, whose Uncle Bobby is getting married to his boyfriend Jamie. Chloe feels left out until she realizes that she doesn't lose her uncle, she simply gains another.

This book is remarkable for including a gay wedding, but not really being about a gay wedding. It's mostly about a little girl who's worried that her favorite uncle won't have time for her after he gets married.

I liked this book specifically because gay marriage was not the central issue. This is a story about Chloe and her Uncle Bobby who happens to be gay. I think it's important for children to see that gay people are just like any other people. Not every book has to be about how gay people are different, or explain the difficulties of being gay. There are plenty of books like that; this one offers something else.

On the latest Rainbow List. Unfortunately the library doesn't have the other picture book on the list, but this was certainly cute, and I'm sure Lola will enjoy it.

Definitely not your everyday picture book! While the wedding in question is between two males (guinea pigs in this case) it is a sweet little story about a girl afraid of losing her relationship with her uncle. We have this in our parenting section, and i think that's a good place--very appropriate for those encountering a similar dilemma.
Whether the fact the marriage is between 2 males bothers you or not is up to you. There has already been an informal challenged on this book, More...

It's a fine story...but in my opinion just kind of weird that they are guinea pigs.
