There are rumors spread across the country, whispers about a secret society of assassins known as the Phantom Legion. Moving only in the deepest shadows and under the darkest nights, the Phantoms are the people’s living nightmare, the ghostly right hand of an oppressive government.

Lightning was born and raised a Phantom. Confined to a dark room and released only to do her

The story is set on a world that is very much like our own, yet small clues tell you it is in a time circa 1940s to 1960s. Biplanes still fly, people shoot revolvers, and the dress code is similar to what I might have seen when (or before) I was a child. With that in mind, the circumstance is not retro. The main character, Lightning, is what is called a Phantom, a dreaded super-assassin trained and used by the despotic government. Because she and her fellow Phantoms are trained only to kill, ...more

Kept me in it the whole way through!

I enjoyed this book to the very end. There were very few slow moments. I'm not a huge fan of first person books but the author did this well. I have a tendency to get bored of books pretty easily, but this story kept me turning pages. For this being one of the first published books by the au

This book is a good read. I agree with the reviewer that said she could have fleshed out the world more but was engrossed in the story nonetheless. The characters are well written and you feel a connection to Lightning as she awakens into this world of light.

I received this book for free from Goodreads "First Reads" program.
