“Just think! This whole world of ours is only a speck of mildew sprung up on a tiny planet, yet we think we can have something great - thoughts, actions! They are all but grains of sand”

*content sigh* Yes, yes, Anna Karenina. One of world's most lauded classics. Now, don't mind me here with my less-than-a-five-star rating, I'm just a young, amateurish reader who cannot possibly hope to understand a profound work of literature such as this one, precisely due to lack of experience. It's true. Or

I couldn't stand for a day not to read Anna Karenina - this book really engages the reader and feels like written today, not a century ago. And now I've got a whole week of Christmas Holiday left until I get home and may start reading the other part of the story!

I can't nothing but wonder why I haven't read this book before. From the first pages I could trust Tolstoi and felt this became my favorite book.

Táto kniha bola neuveriteľná! Nikdy som nič z ruskej literatúry predtým nečítala a nad touto klasikou som už dlhšie premýšľala, až som sa k čítaniu konečne dokopala. A som tomu nesmierne rada!

I read this book a while ago and honestly way too young to understand a story like this (I was 18). I remember liking parts of not but not really "getting" it.

Worth mentioning this is an opus dei approved book. One of about 6 books they always recommend and insist you read. When they approve of a book and try to make you read it you've got to wonder. Some sort of subliminal message in there that probably is along the lines of -don't lead a life of sin, eventually you will regret it and die a cr

Anna and Vronsky: passion, crime, all-consuming love, yadda yadda yadda...
Maybe I'm too young to understand. (This book will definitely get a re-read some day.)

Personally, I found the quiet and humble tale of Konstantin Levin much more enticing at this particular point in my life.
I had never read as insightful description of love for work as was described through the thoughts of Levin. If I closed my eyes I could just about see the golden grain fields and feel the soft touch of summer wind o

Lovely book, I especially liked the character of Levin. Very much looking forward to seeing the characters' evolution in the second part.

"Enchanted" comes close to how this Tolstoy's writing style makes you feel. To get into the head of every character and live his/her emotions is an art, which every budding author needs to aspire to, if they don't already. The story background is uncomplicated and all the characters except, Anna are painfully simple. What's not so simple is their inner turmoil and the phases of utter helplessness that every character in the prose goes through. At one time while reading it, I fancied about the mi ...more

This work is probably best left for another time as the scars of my own marital wounds have as yet to toughen. As such, I found myself strongly identifying with two characters, the angst-ridden cuckold Alexander Karenina and the forever questioning Kostya Levin. Although the plot bears some resemblance to my particular narrative, the characters of Anna Karenina and Vronsky are not analogous to the antagonists who populated my own particular drama– a woman lacking a soul and an aged man on schola ...more

The edition I am reading cut Anna Karenina in two volumes. There are many things to say about what I felt after I've read the first one. Levin is by far my favourite character, although in the beginning I wasn't very impressed by him, the same goes for Kitty. I find them to be somehow similar in their development, in how they grow up. They are facing the battle between what is old and what is new and they are trying their best to get this battle to a peace and in the same time to give life a mea ...more

A clear masterpiece of world literature, in my humble opinion. I believe Tolstoy took realism to its height with this novel. I also feel that contemporary novels are more or less continuing the literary realism started in 19th century and if Tolstoy would have lived today he would have been an equally famous writer.

In terms of the novel's characters, I empathized mostly with Levin and I was really happy to see him happy at the end of first volume. Regarding the drama of Anna and Alexei Karenin,

This is not the edition I read, and I also read this before I was involved with Goodreads, but I want to have a record here that I once read it. You have to do that with a book like this. I can now go to my grave in peace because I have read Anna Karenina..... Well, it's been a while, but I do remember some of the feelings I got as I read it, and some of the feelings I had at the end of the book. Mostly, I am surprised now that I could have stuck with it and read it all. I remember not stretchin ...more

I hated this book from the beginning. I could not get myself to read it for months, even though I have to read it for school and I should probably read it twice. But as I read page by page, slowly, I came to like it. I hated the character of Anna at the beginning, but I liked Kitty's character and I definitely wanted to wear all the dresses and dance the dances. Somewhere in the middle I really started to like Anna, but Kitty seemed all weird to me when she was in Germany. Also, I hated both Cou ...more

A magnificent book. A book that moves the reader to tears over the suffering of others. From the reviews I read in this column I suggest that the readers need information background that sheds light on the kind of societal demands imposed on individuals at that time. Divorce was rare and usually out of the question. The story itself refers to women who rode trains the rest of their lives because of indisgression, and now homeless , banished from society. Anna became one of those persons who no l ...more

Tolstoy is a master of the nuance of emotion and the human spirit. I found some of the chapters on Levin and his farm to be tedious but outside of that found it to be a brilliant read. The inner demons that haunt people in relationships whether between Levin and Kitty or Anna and Vronsky are so intriguing and found myself thinking, "wow that is so messed up, but have been in exactly that same place." When love and the overt struggle for power interplay magic and tragedy can and often do happen. ...more

i read this novel nonstop, and then when finished it, i felt so touched and... hurt. somehow it was so true that i couldn't hold back my grief and sorrows for all the characters. it's a part of life. in the 19th century, perhaps those things are not strange and old at all. they showed us, modern citizens, how the power of outdating manners of behaviour controlled people's lives and destroyed who and what deserved more livings and happiness.

A compelling and well written read that was not as difficult as I was expecting. Out of all the character's Levin was my favorite. I could identify with his struggles the most. All the characters seemed to jump off the page to me, and I would find myself thinking about them even when I wasn't reading the book. The downside was it had too much detail at times, and I had some trouble keeping the names straight.

I don't understand his writing style. He skims over the important stuff, like character and relationship development, and focuses on details no one cares about, like tens of pages about harvesting hay. In the end, I couldn't connect with any of the characters, and therefore couldn't care about the drama in their lives, and I ended up skimming a good portion of the book.

The crazy thing is I'm still reading part 2.

I tackled this huge read just to challenge myself, thinking it would be pure torture, but ended up actually liking it. The story line kept me reading even though there were times that Tolstoy droned on and on and on some more. I admit there were moments when I cried for mercy and begged to be put out of my misery, but I was hooked on the characters so I read until the very end. Phew! I haven't worked up the courage for War and Peace yet, but maybe someday.

I enjoyed reading this even though it was essentially a long, involved soap opera. I like Tolstoy's literary style. Got to say it was a real downer and I gave it 4 stars because I liked the writing not necessarily the story. I'm glad it's over. Also, the version I read was from kindle and it was all in 1 book. Not sure how this 2 parter got on my book list.

at the end of the book, there was a letter from Tolstoy himself to someone, wherein he said something to the effect of: "this is not a novel in the traditional sense of the word, where you read to follow a story line"....I wish i had read that before spending 6 weeks trying to get through this book. :) oh well, at least my husband is proud of me for reading a 'real' book. :)

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider To ...more
