This book really picks up in the second half. As in the first installment, the action sequences are so good that they elevate everything else.

I have a weird relationship with Greg Weisman's writing. I'm pretty familiar with his work in other media, and I've read a LOT of his website, where he answers behind-the-scenes questions about his work. So when I'm reading his books, instead of thinking, "Eh, I don't know if that character would say that," or "This part is cool," I'm thinking, "I wish Gre

Spirits of Ash and Foam is a young adult fantasy novel and the second installment in Greg Weisman’s Rain of the Ghosts series. Set in the fictional islands known as the Prospero Keys (more commonly known as the Ghost Keys to the locals), the story of Rain Cacique picks up immediately following the events of the first novel. Familiar characters return for a brand new adventure, including Sebastian Bohique (Rain’s grandfather), Charlie Dauphin (Rain’s best friend), and Miranda Guerrero (the new gi ...more

Last year's Rain of the Ghosts was a quick, fun read that kept me entertained but left me with a few questions. The sequel, Spirits of Ash and Foam was one I was really looking forward to and I couldn't wait to get back to the Ghost Keys. Unfortunately, it seems this book suffers from the dreaded Second Book Syndrome. The bad outweighed the good here.

There's a string of islands in the Bermuda Triangle known to the locals as the Ghost Keys. Rain Cacique and

It is rare that the sequel is better than the original, but this book does it. I started reading this series because I was told there was a manatee in this book (which I love manatees). Anyways I like the way it uses old mythology and creates new to make a very interesting story. I was worried when I saw vampire in the description since this is a young adult book, however this book was pleasant and a very different type of vampire. I will read more of this series as they come out for sure. The o ...more

"As Rain is starting to dive deeper into the world of ghosts and mysterious zemi she first encountered in Rain of Ghosts, she realizes how big the mystery she is trying to solve is. In addition to the ghosts, she now finds an intriguing and sorrowful manatee that is part woman and a pack of mosquitos that seem out for life. With the help of some new friends, Rain will have to continue on her journey as the Searcher and Healer while trying to discover what that really means." Full review at Fresh ...more

I received a copy from Netgalley.

After trying to several times I'm just not getting into this book at all so have come to the conclusion its not for me. Not rating because I've not read enough to really give it a star rating, I think it has the potential to be a fun middle grade adventure book, but personality, just not for me. So I am DFNing and moving on.

Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity, even though its not to my taste.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book has a good storyline, but just seemed to lack, some of the situations didn't make sense, and I just felt disconnected.

Another great read by Greg Weisman. I enjoyed this second book in the series even more than the first. Rain Cacique's search for the next mystical zemi was compelling and all the characters got more time to develop. There were interesting twists and well integrated mythology. This is a great young adult novel that even grownups can enjoy. I was sad to learn that the next book in the series was delayed for sales reasons but knowing Mr. Weisman's persistence and tenacity I'm sure we'll get to see ...more
