Alors dans ce second tome, le conseil se réunit est décide de ce qu'ils vont faire des objets magiques de Stargmar avait gardé au château. Il est décidé que Merlin aurait la Harpe fleurie et qu'il aurait comme mission de faire revivre l'île de Fincayra avant que Rhita Gawr revienne avec ses gobelins. Malheureusement au bout de quelques semaines, Merlin se sent seul et prend la décision de faire venir sa mère sur l'île. Bien sûr tout ne se passe pas comme prévu et sa mère tombe malade, le seul moyen de la sauver et de trouver l'Élixir de Dagda.

Le livre est donc découpé en 3 parties. La première partie est donc la mise en place de la quête. Ce qui m'a le plus dérangée dans le tome, c'est le changement de comportement de Rhia qui au fond pousse Merlin justement à faire venir sa mère sur l'île. En faite je ne comprends vraiment pas pourquoi Rhia change à ce point. Quand on les quitte à la fin tu premier tome, Merlin et elle, sont très proche, mais là Rhia est distante et vive les leçons de morale qu'elle lui donne.

Ensuite la seconde partie, celle qui justement donne cet avis mitigé. Merlin, pour sauver sa mère et trouver Dagda, Merlin doit partir à la recherche des 7 Chants de la magie. 7 âmes.
« Apprendre à changer », « Le pouvoir de Lier », « Savoir Protéger », « L'art de Nommer », « Le pouvoir de Sauter », « Eliminer » et pour finir « Le don de Voir ».
Et donc, Rhia et Merlin partent pour la quête, rejoint par un bouffon Bumbelwy qui n'est pas drôle. Mon gros problème étant que j'ai trouvé que pour trouver l'âme des chants, ils vont très vite. C'est vraiment trop facile surtout pour les premiers chants. J'ai vraiment trouvé ça dommage ! Ce livre aurait été un véritable coup de cœur si les chants avaient été un peu plus complexes.
Par contre la fin de cette seconde partie m'a juste, heu comment dire, bluffer n'est pas le terme approprier, mais la révélation qui est faite, mais jamais je n'aurais cru ça quoi ! Vraiment chapeau l'artiste !

Et vient la troisième partie, pleine de rebondissements, de révélations qui ont relevé justement ce manque qui avait dans la seconde partie. J'aime beaucoup comment il clôture ce tome 2.

Bref un tome en demi teinte, mais que j'ai beaucoup aimé au final et j'ai vraiment hâte de lire la suite. Je pense que je sais de quoi il va parler au vu de la couverture et de ce qu'il se passe dans ce tome.(less)

Dans la première partie du livre, j’ai trouvé Merlin agaçant, il fait preuve d’orgueil, il est beaucoup trop sur de lui. Mais tout cela a bien sur une raison, et sert admirablement l’intrigue. Il va vite se repentir, de ne pas avoir écouter les avertissements des divers personnes qui l’entouraient. Non seulement, par orgueil, il va abandonner la tâche qui lui avait été confiée, mettant en danger, toute l’île de Fincayra, mais il va également payer très cher son entêtement, à vouloir faire revenir sa mère. En effet, Rhita Gawr n’aura pas attendu longtemps pour exercer sa première vengeance. S’il veut sauver Helen, (la mère de merlin), l’apprenti enchanteur va devoir partir dans une quête désespérée, accompagnée de la fidèle Rhia, pour apprendre à maîtriser les sept chants de l’enchanteur. Ces différentes étapes m’ont fait penser, à la légende des douze travaux d’Hercule, l’auteur en fait d’ailleurs mention dans le livre.

Sur ce chemin périlleux, notre duo d’aventurier va rencontrer, Bumbelwy, un nouveau personnage. Ce dernier est un « bouffon » ou du moins c’est ce qu’il essaie d’être, mais il ne fait rire personne, il agace tout le monde autour de lui. Il suivra Merlin et Rhia dans la découverte des sept chants de l’enchanteur, et avant la fin du livre, il finira par faire « rire » quelqu’un de très inattendu, mais je ne vous en dis pas plus.

Dans ce tome, Merlin va apprendre la sagesse, il s’agit d’une sorte de parcours initiatique pour lui, sur les traces de son grand-père, Tuatha, qui a été un très grand enchanteur. Merlin découvre la future épée du roi « Arthur », son nom n’est pas mentionnée, mais il apprend qu’il existe une prophétie selon laquelle dans quelques années, il plantera cette épée dans un rocher, et que seul un grand roi arrivera à l’en déloger. Pour nous, bien sur, aucun doute n’est permis.

J’ai préféré ce tome, au précédent, tout simplement, parce que je trouve qu’il n’y a aucun temps mort, l’ensemble s’enchaîne très vite. De plus, à la fin du roman, des révélations importantes nous sont données. J’ai hâte de lire la suite.

Ce livre a été publié aux Editions Nathan en avril 2013.

Well, you can guess what happens -- Rhita Gawr sends a "death shadow" after Merlin, which attacks Elen. She can only be cured by the Dagda's intervention.

The spirit of Merlin's grandfather Tuatha tells him that he must master the Seven Songs of wizardry before he can meet Dagda, and he only has a month before Elen will die. Desperate to save her, Merlin sets off to accomplish his mission -- along with Rhia and the depressing jester Bumblewy -- but he may lost just as much as he stands to gain...

Most fantasy heroes pretty much take the "saving the world" thing in stride, so it's a nice touch that this heroic quest is triggered by the hero's ego blowing out of control, meaning he has to fix what he's broken. And like any magical quest, it's crammed with bizarre creatures, magic and a new brewing threat to Fincayra.

Barron's prose is still richly-descriptive, soaked with forests, leaves and fields, as well as a burned wasteland that is almost painful to read about. He balances out a feeling of urgency, woven with humor (Bumblewy's eventual success in making someone laugh), strange magical items, and a journey that reminds me of Greek heroes' journeys into the underworld.

Merlin is the same flawed hero as before, and he finds out the hard way that with great power comes great responsibility, yada yada Spiderman stuff. It's a wrenching, powerful chunk of character development, particularly since EVERY problem in this book is his fault. Rhia is the same irrepressable forest sprite, ready to pierce Merlin's ego when it needs a pinprick, and we learn something genuinely surprising about her in this story.

If The Lost Years of Merlin was an exploration of the hero's mysterious roots, then Seven Songs is all about him exploring his even more mysterious magical powers.(less)

- I like how Barron imagined Stonehenge to be created, but how does it get to Earth and England?

- Merlin is SO frustrating!! He is an arrogant jerk who thinks very highly of himself. It gets a little better towards the end, and learns some humility, but most of the book, he is arrogant.

- I'm grateful there is a map in the front of the book. It helped since there was a ton of traveling.

- I love how Merlin receives Excalibur! Naming was my favorite song! I loved that whole part.

I recently reread it as I’m reading the entire series now. For the second time around, it was still enjoyable, but easier to see some of the flaws. Everything that I wrote about the first book applies to this book as well, i.e. relates well to the history of Merlin as we know it, good writing, etc. A few things that stuck out to me in this one that bothered me, though, were the excessive use of deus ex machina to save Merlin, and how his inadequacies were always adequate. Merlin was always meant to do great things, and this book helps to relate how he came to his greatness, at least, in part. I only feel slightly cheated when his great achievements were brought about by external events. In short, Merlin gets himself into a lot of trouble in this one and it seems impossible to ever solve his problems, yet he does, every time, by a chance encounter with something or someone. Very seldom does he ever do things correctly and solve the problem himself. This only bothered me because I feel that if Merlin caused so much trouble, then I would like to see him undo his mistakes by himself. I understand also that Merlin is still very young and has much to learn before he can do great things on his own, so much of this is forgivable. If those kinds of things don’t bother you, then you will definitely enjoy this entry in the series. There are even closer calls than in the first one and more heartwarming moments than before. I think, by this one, you really start to care for the characters more. It left me waiting to know what Merlin will be able to accomplish after this because he certainly feels more mature at the end, in more ways than one.(less)

Awwwww... Merlin has become a teenager. Quite cute actually. Enjoyable sequel, though a bit cut and paste. Again Merlin's judgement is lacking (AKA he has a bad feeling bad feeling about something, decides to go ahead and do it anyway, something horrible happens and he seems totally surprised) and he never seems to learn from his mistakes. His pride is his hubris even thjough he comes out without a scratch no matter what. Pretty predictable but good source of entertainment

I sort of feel like I would have liked this novel a bit more had I not read the first.
In this second novel Merlin's slide back into petulance after all the gains he had made was a bit grating. I get that he might suffer from some arrogance after toppling the threats in the first novel, but the wingy, whining temperment the reader was a little much in the first act.
This is redeemed later on, and compared to the fun I had with the later chapters later in the book it wasn't the biggest deal.

I think the book was very good. This was not the best book I ever read, but it was enjoyable. I like the character development and the relationships between them. The plot was good, but there were no exciting/suspenseful moments for me. The fight scenes were short. I enjoy the series so far, and look forward to reading the rest of the books. I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers who want to know about Merlin’s early life.

Some readers have suggested Merlin's rather unpleasant personality is a flaw in this book. I disagree: I think his boyish arrogance and foolishness sets this novel apart from most fantasy works. Merlin has a tragic childhood to overcome, and he's still learning about his powers. The tension between his desire to heal the isle of Fincayra, and his stronger urge to find his mother provides a strong backbone for the second book in this series. So as I started reading this book it irritated me. Gone was the Merlin from the first book only to be replaced by a whining little brat. It was a completely different character!. I almost put the book down and went to something else, but alas it didn't last long only 3 or 4 chapters of the book. The rest of the book was a good read though not as goods the first one........ now on to book 3!

These are great books and well written at that they share the stories of Merlin the great wizard who fought along side King Aurthur, In the time before King Aurthur. From the minute I opened this book I couldn't put it down. From front to back this is a great book about a great myth in English culture. If you get a chance i suggest this book.

I'm not sure if I will continue reading this series. This is the second book and it's dragging a little. I like the quest he is on, but the character of Merlin is a little shallow and sometimes downright mean. There are about 11 books, I believe. That's kind of a big commitment. I might read book 3, but if it continues to be slow, I'll probably move on to a new series.

It was a cute book, definitely made for younger teens. The time-line of the actions in the book was not very well thought out, there was no way even a "hero" could have completed the tasks Merlin was given in a month, much less a young boy, but it did keep the story moving quickly.

I LOVED the rich vocabulary in this book. It's a nice change after reading the popular books that are more simple in their structure.

Often a sequel does not live up to the quality of the first book in a series, but this book was wonderful. I am eager to read the next one!

I think adults who are fans of the Merlin legend will enjoy this too.

Just about as good as the first book. Barron threw a lot more fantasy into it, and I liked that. Didn't leave me hanging - I like how each book stands on its own, but that there is an over-arching storyline.

Can't wait for Book 3: The Fires of Merlin (aka THE RAGING FIRES).

It's interesting to read about the teenage Merlin. He's a teenager so he's not quite the full blown wizard and has to learn lessons that will make him a great wizard. Now I want to read more about the adult Merlin. Are there any good Merlin books you'd recommend??

Decent but read kind of like a videogame (his staff lights up with different icons to show what he's learned). Also, the main character is a jerk (yeah, Merlin). His character development seems to be making him less of a jerk, which isn't exactly the same thing as wise.

I'm really liking this series. The second book is actually a little better than the first because it starts right into the story.
My husband is always finding hidden gospel meanings that writers throw into books. I told him he has to read this one. Even I was able to spot the similarities to gospel teachings. Very good book.
