Thank you Karen for loaning me this book! It consists mostly letters from Eliza de Feuillide to her cousin Philadelphia "Phylly" Walter. Edited and commented on by Deirdre Le Faye. Most of the letters are interesting in of themselves. Le Faye's comments are....ok and limited. I think Eliza deserves a full bio or a period piece film.

This is an excellently researched and presented biography of Jane Austen's cousin Eliza, who married first a French aristocrat and then (after his death by guillotine in the French Revolution) Jane's brother Henry. Eliza's story is largely presented through a series of her vivacious letters, which together with Le Faye's short narratives connecting the letters present a well-rounded picture of a charming and elegant woman.

Indispensable, if a bit dry. One could have wished for more research outside the Austen family archives, and a more lively presentation of Eliza, given the interest of the subject.

It includes all the surviving letters of Jane Austen's cousin, Eliza de Feuillide and so is able to give a comprehensive portrait of her. She comes across as intelligent, humane, witty, and highly educated and literate. The letters are beautifully composed. Ms le Faye does not commentate herself too much but lets the letters speak for themselves. It makes an excellent companion to the novels of Jane Austen and should be read by al ...more
