Gail Carson Levine is the best at taking a fairy tale and twisting it into something a little different, a little smart, and definitely funny. Her main characters are always strong, likeable characters (even if they are a bit quirky).

This is the third book in The Princess Tales series, based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. The plot is basically the same. An angry fairy curses princess Sonora, saying she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Thankfully there is another fairy who modifies More...

Levine relays the story of Sleeping Beauty with humor, styleand wit. As in her other fairy tale retellings, the heroine has bothbeauty and brains, and attempts to take charge of her own destiny. Further plot twists include a know-it-all princess, a dimwitted suitor, and an explanation for why fairies are no longer invited to naming ceremonies to bestow gifts.

Charming illustrations reminiscent of Lang's fairy books add to the text and extend the story. The novel is attractively packaged in a non More...

It was alright. Though the first two chapters mirrored the first two movie scenes played in "Sleeping Beauty." What troubled me is that if Sonora would sleep for one-hundred years, when she woke up wouldn't people talk differently? Wouldn't the look of things change a little? Well, nothing much changed like that between the two-hundred year time period of "The Fairy's Mistake" and "The Princess Test." Though I didn't understand why there should be a Queen Hermione II AND a King Humphrey III if i More...

Bagus sekali! Ini cerita Putri Tidur yang diplesetkan. Bukunya memang sangat tipis, tapi pesan moralnya sangat jelas. Buku ini sepertinya men-challenge stereotype putri-putri dalam cerita dongeng yang kelihatan cantik tetapi tidak pintar.

It was cool reading about a baby who was gifted will Brilliance (ten times smarter than everyone else) because as a baby she could talk and she never had to sleep. I wonder what it would be like to never have to sleep and to be able to talk and do everything a average adult could at 1 month old. Kind of cool. I of course liked how (since it was a fairy tale) the prince and the princess were perfect for eachother. He wanted to know everything and had so many question, she could answer all those q More...

This is the weakest of Gail Carson Levine's books that I've read so far, but it was definitely entertaining.

I think this book is meant for younger kids, maybe kids just starting to read chapter books.

It's a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story. In this version, the princess is not just passively waiting around for her prince to come. Sure, she is asleep when her prince arrives, but before that she is VERY smart and very energetic and quite the role model. My favorite part of the story is that More...

A retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but with little funny details about Sonora. She receives all these gifts from fairies when she's a baby, among these is brilliance. So she's always talking and annoying the children her age. Her family hides all the spindles in the castle, but she still gets pricked, and goes to sleep.
An easy, fast read. Sonora is a cute character, and definitely has her opinions about things. I like her because she reads all the time and I like to read too. The characters are More...

Gail Carson Levine brings humor to another well-loved fairytale by making Sonora a princess blessed at birth with extraordinary intelligence. From that moment on she does not coo but begins reading treatises on how to improve the everyday workings of the castle. When she begins to crawl and then walk, she sets daily distance goals and travels in straight lines and perfect circles. Sonora, however, is not as boring as all her reading and talking encourages everyone to think. She is witty and ofte More...

This retelling of the classic "Sleeping Beauty" is fun and interesting. Princess Sonora is portrayed as being particularly intelligent, an interesting quality in the Princess's life. It's less romance all at once like in the Disney portrayal and gives you a little bit more, well, story I guess. Backstory. It's a fun book, especially for reading to youngsters at bedtime!

This is another princess story that I read with Whitney. I think this was a little over her head at times--just that people are sleeping for 100 years, so when they explain the complexities associated with the passing of princes, etc., I think she didn't really get it. It wasn't my favorite of the princess tales, to be honest. But it's cute.

I first read The Princess Tales Collection when I was about nine--one of the first books in English I ever read. I absolutely loved them. Gail Carson Levine became one of my favorite authors.
I recently reread them, ten years later, and they are still as poignant and sweet and funny as ever. This one, Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep, is my personal favorite. I loved when the fairy Adrianna made Sonora so smart and I laughed so much at the stupid Prince Melvin. I liked how Levine never makes h More...

This was a fun little book. Lara and I read it together, and we both enjoyed it. It's a very quick, short book patterned after the tale of Sleeping Beauty. However in this book, we read about the incredibly brilliant Princess Sonora and her quest to fall asleep at exactly the right time in order to marry that very special prince.

I always like Gail Carson Levine, as it's cute and Clean and I can read it to Claire...and someday she can read it to herself without me worrying about what is inside the cover! :) These retellings (the Princess Tales) are really funny. Very short and 'modern' retellings of classic fairy tales that are really fun to read out loud to little girls!

THE WORST OF THIS BOOK was Sonora (as an infant gifted with superior intelligence)..."refused to breasfeed. She admitted that it was good for her, but she said it was a barbaric, cannibalistic custom."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! What a sad message to send to little girls!!!

Amusing and clever retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" - it would be loads of fun to read to a 5 year old....takes about an hour to read....I was intrigued by it when wandering through the library - it was not in the children's section but shelved with the fairy tales.

talk about people made for each other! Christopher and Sonara are a match made in heaven. I am sure somewhere Prince Christopher is asking question after question and Princess Sonara is happily giving him the answers! A great fun read!

A great short story from a fantastic author. I especially love the description of what things would be like if people in a castle slept for a hundred years - much more realistic (and amusing) than the typical retelling.

I didn't find this to be as sprightly as Ella Enchanted and some of Levine's other tales, but it was funny in its own way. My little listener's attention wandered a bit, so it may be better for older kids.

I really enjoyed this book. I personally really like the sleeping beauty story anyway, and this one is particularly nice, especially because she's not as useless and helpless as the disney one.

The fairies are at it again. Giving gifts no one wants, gifts that cause mayhem and distress. How do balding sheep bring true love to a sleeping princess who is 10 times smarter than any human and a curious prince?

"Princess Sonora knows, but don't ask her" has become one of our family's favorite inside jokes. I enjoyed the reluctant prince that was determined to kiss her in order to learn more about her story.

Pelesetan cerita Sleeping Beauty yang lumayan lucu dan menghibur. Cocok untuk dibaca santai karena temanya yang ringan dan fisik yang ringan juga (bukunya lumayan tipis untuk disebut novel :p)

I really enjoy Gail Carson Levine's retelling of fairy tales. They always have a twist that makes them more fun than the original. I think these would be fun to real aloud.
