I've never read what I would technically call a Romance novel and didn't know what to expect, except I've listened to Angel read her bits and pieces at our Improv writers' group, and I've loved her development of characters and descriptions. I wanted to see how she put it all together into a novel. I found "A Family for Tyler" compelling and beautifully written. The details and accuracy of the settings are consistent and well integrated. The characters are well developed--not too deeply or unrea...more
This story was a really good one. It did confuse me some tho...

The ranch was supposed to be 2 hours west of Austin, in Texas. Then they kept talking about West Texas, but you really have to go at least 3 hours to be in actual West Texas, but never mind that. Then the story kept talking about a city with suburbs, but 2 hours west of Austin (and 2 hours from San Antonio both) you've gone through several counties, and none of them are big enough to have a city with suburbs. Kerrville, which is a l...more

If you like complicated family dynamics and a happy ending, this story is for you. Wyatt Hawkins owns a big ranch, is part of a large family (he's the oldest of 6 brothers and sisters!). Emily Ivers is a judge and a woman with a mother suffering from dementia who, like Emily, was abused by Emily's stepfather. Although she doesn't know it (or perhaps refuses to recognize it) she suffers from what PTSD, what Wyatt fears also afflicts his younger brother, newly returned and injured from the middle...more

"Smits does a particularly good job describing the people in this scenario: Emily's skittishness and Tyler's fierce independence both ring true." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars

I live in Colorado with my husband and daughter, as well as a constantly changing mixture of family and pets. I thought winning the Romance Writer's of America's Golden Heart Award was the highlight of my writing career, but seeing my first Harlequin book on the shelves topped that. My background as a social worker has helped fill my head with the stories of people, and inspired the characters who...more
