Arranged as a mother’s survival guide to her daughter, For Tamara is a touching and inventive collection of poems about surviving and thriving from the author of The Work of Days.

Ostensibly intended as a document of essential practical and emotional advice, this handbook ultimately acts as a reassuring record of help and of hope. Anticipating her daughter’s needs, from bas

Sarah Lang’s second book of poetry, For Tamara, is an utterly compelling read. Set in a not-too-distant post-apocalyptic future, Lang’s long poem imagines a world in which all of the essential structures of society have been wiped away. Gone are the internet, books, libraries, highways, hospitals, farms, functioning governments, television. What remains: a few survivors, some of whom make it, some of whom are doomed to die later. A compelling post-apocalyptic vision--a stream of consciousness style "book" written by a mother for her daughter Tamara and also consisting of letters to her husband who disappeared in the aftermath of what I assume is a nuclear disaster. What would you want your child to know if we had to start over? What would matter if everything we had ever known was destroyed? What would be left to us in the wake of our most feared disaster? Sarah Lang answers these questions in sometimes disjointed ...more

The Walking Dead + poetry = For Tamara, and it's really, really cool.

Written in the form of a letter/survival guide from a mother to her daughter in a post-apocalyptic world, I was surprised by how much this collection not only resonated with me, but really kinda broke my heart. It's an original way to tell maybe our most important story: how to survive, and what really matters.

Check it out.
