In this novel Davenport is pitted against someone who is a master at games. When a high profile psychiatrist goes missing along with her two young daughters, Davenport starts looking for clues. Davenport is forced to think like a gamer rather than a cop to find the victims. All the while the entire police department is nagging Davenport on his imminent proposal to his girlfriend Weather.

I have been reading this series in between the rest of the books on my shelf. I think that this has got to be the best one so far. I like the way Lucas figures things out...puts the clues together to find the criminal and the victims. I was on the edge of my chair most of the time and even had trouble putting the book down at night to go to sleep. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

This was my first John Sanford novel. I liked the storyline. I didn't like his use of language. I may give him another try but I just about gave this one up. The only thing that kept me going was that it was set in the Twin Cities, with references to many familiar landmarks. 4 stars for storyline, 1 star for bad language... weighting more towards the storyline and I come up with a 3.

I have read all of the juicy unrepentant detective Lucas Davenport series and this was cetainly a good one.
The main character chases evil and beds his women with equal passion. The story line is always tight.

One of my favorite series in high school/college. I'm dating them all in 2001 because I can't really remember when I read them, so the cusp between the two works for me.

This book was ok. It did have some good thinking parts, but at the same time it felt like something I'd read before. This was the only "Prey" book I read even though it is the 7th of the series (which I didn't know when I picked it up). It felt like it was written with a strict formula and outline. Sure the storyline was gripping and gutwrenching, but I've read about real cases that were just as sensational or worse. After being exposed to real life, this book just didn't hold up to m...more

This is the best of the Prey series that I've read. I consider myself a mini-expert based on having read seven of these titles in just a few weeks. The John Mail character was so completely crazy and ruthless, and the plight of the victims so awful--the reader just has to be at the edge of her seat the entire way through. I was thinking about the notion of genre books and how they can't compare to literary fiction. But they don't have to. A good detective novel has the ability to stir up just th...more

Very well written murder mystery. Beware: some swearing and it deals with a frightening and dark subject. Kidnapping, rape, abuse.

Author recommended by my boss. So far, it's gripping.
(Later) Very good, keeps moving, never dull, some great twists at the end. I like how things didn't tie up in a neat little bundle but the story really worked. I'll read Sandford again.

I must admit it is quite exciting to know the locales that are being mentioned in the book although it is disturbing to considering it happening around here. It was also a little sycophantic towards building a Minnesota reader base, in my opinion. Too many names not to be considered so. It was an interesting twist (well, maybe not so much nowadays but still not standard) to have the identity of the killer known but still having another aspect to guess. I failed miserably, I was convinced it was ...more

This is one of his best prey books. Any book that sticks in your mind like this one did for me, I consider a good read.
