Bad Guys (Zack Walker #2)
“Fans of the crime caper will rejoice” that Linwood Barclay is back with the hilarious follow-up to his “riotously funny and irreverent”* debut, in which paranoid pop Zack Walker plotted to transplant his city-savvy wife and two teenage kids to the tranquillity of the burbs–where planned communities prevail and fathers rest easy. Well, not quite…and now the Walkers have mo...more

This is the second book in the series featuring Zack Walker, scifi writer and journalist. Zack and his family are back in the city and his daughter has started college. She also appears to have picked up a stalker. Zack wonders whether he should be worried about this or whether he is overreacting again.

I rate it almost a $. Barclay has a knack for getting me into the family involved in this crime caper. Zack is a feature writer for a newspaper and hanging with a private detective in a stakeout to catch thieves breaking into upgrade clothing stores. But Zack is a chronic worrier regarding his family which involves an 18 y.o. daughter, Angie, a live-at-home college student. One worry is a young man, Trevor, who has become a stalker, constantly pestering. The humor comes with Zack following Angie...more

This is the continuing saga of uber paranoid dad Zack Walker. He is now writing features for the major newspaper after moving back from the burbs with his family. Zacks daughter Angie is now a college freshman. She is being stalked by a fellow student and Zack does his best to follow her and keep her safe. Zack is also doing a feature on the day in the life as a Private investigator. His contact is after some really bad guys who in turn are trailing Zack in order to retri...more

Recommends it for:
those who enjoy Canadian mysteries with a blend of humour and drama
Zack Walker, features writer for the Metropolitan newspaper, has had some really busy nights lately. He’s been assigned to write about the life of PI Lawrence Jones, who’s been staking out high-end men’s clothing stores targeted by crash-and-grab thieves. When Zack’s off duty, he occasionally checks up on his eighteen-year-old daughter’s whereabouts. Zack’s perpetual worries about Angie’s safety soar into overdrive when he learns she has a stalker. Angie doesn’t take the stalker seriously, but w...more
aaaaah. Obviously an early one by Barclay. Obviously written by a man. I think this is the last one of his that I will read - his 'everyman' turned detective with random, strange events - 'I think a car is following me' that then turns into some convoluted mystery is getting tired.
I like the daughter in this one. there is some great father/family/wife humor that I appreciated. As a mystery, not so much.
His later ones are better, but still not in love.

I read Linwood Barclay’s first novel, BAD MOVE, and I liked it. Though it started off slow, it was quite funny and well written.
Bad Guys maintained a steady jogger’s pace from the beginning, but I’d hardly call it a page turner, and it wasn’t that funny.
All in all, BAD GUYS was just barely good enough to get me to buy his next novel in the series, LONE WOLF.

Finally!!!!
I blame college for making it take so long to read this damn book.
The book was so boring, I seen the majority of the twists coming a mile away. I almost thought "no wait, that is way too obvious it couldn't be that. It will be something else random" but no I was right, it was obvious and predictable and I want this book to end NOW. About 2 pages near the end of this book saved this book for me, I was surprised but it didn't change the main plot that much.

Zack Walker is a funny, self-effacing man who extracts common sense from his brain only in extreme circumstances. His involvement in this story would be boring were it not for his humorous, safety-minded nervousness about his family and their daily events. The character of Barbie was a bit cliched, but the read was fun. Looking forward to Zack Walker #3.
I previously read "Bad Move" by Barclay, and it's really a pleasure to read a newer book by an author whose work actually improves with experience. He may become one of my favorites.

2nd of the Zack Walker series and hilarious to boot.
Barclay brings back his character Zack Walker for more hilarious action in Bad Guys. I recommend that a person read Bad Move by Barclay before taking on Bad Guys. This will give someone time to get to know Zack who appears to be an over paranoid parent that attracts trouble like an outhouse attracts flies. Barclay writes superb action sequences that are filled with humor and great characters, some of them quite far off the beaten path. I look forward to reading more books containing the misadven...more
Then 2nd in the "Zack Walker" series starting with "Bad Move." These books are quirky, suspenseful and quite funny. In this story, Zack is paranoid about what his children are doing. He decides to start following his daughter around to determine if she is safe. He is a reporter for a local newspaper and while trying to write a story about a series of department store break-ins also becomes involved with the local mob.
