Del Toro's cult masterpiece locates the monstrous within fairytales and links it to the very real horrors of post-Civil War Spain. This book explores the film's cross-cultural and historical contexts, and its groundbreaking use of ancient myths and folklore. It also includes an interview with del Toro about the genesis and production of the film.

Mar Diestro-Dopido's BFI: Pan's Labyrinth (2013) is yet another example of extensive look at a contemporary classic film, this time by the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro. After the Introduction: The Real and the Imagined, Pan's Impact, A Long, Long Time Ago , the book is divided into four chapters: 1.The Horror(s) of War: Spanish War(s), The Mexican Connection, The War and the Past, 2.Vidal and Amnesia: Family Ties, Vidal's Three Denials, 3.Ofelia and Memory: The Underworld, 4. The End...: ...more
An incredibly well-thought out, intriguing and fascinating insight to my most favourite movie ever. And, whilst I already knew many of the facts and symbolism, it still offered me even deeper meanings and historical facts about the Spanish Civil War and General Franco.

I think Del Toro is a bloody genius!
