What a treat it was to revisit Ishiguro's Japanese phase. Two of the three stories here predate A Pale View of Hills, but show a writer with a clear sense of purpose (one that would largely go MIA after his masterpiece, The Unconsoled). Spartan writing and a wonderful introduction that is absolutely must-read for early fans. The second story is a nascent, dry run of An Artist of the Floating World. What more could you ask for in 74 pages (hence, the rating).

Deftly drawn short stories with Japanese themes, often dealing with the clash of values between older and younger generations after the war.

Kazuo Ishiguro (カズオ・イシグロ or 石黒 一雄) is a British novelist of Japanese origin. His family moved to England in 1960. Ishiguro obtained his Bachelor's degree from the University of Kent in 1978 and his Master's from the University of East Anglia's creative writing course in 1980. He became a British citizen in 1982. He now lives in London.
