Walter the ferry dog loved to greet cars as they came on board each morning. Fetching the captain's newspaper and tasting the cook's bacon were Walter's other important jobs. Cupcake the Cat was just about the only thing Walter disliked about being a ferry dog. One rainy day the waves were rough and no one was paying much attention to Walter. Even worse, Cupcakes was pokin ...more

Walter, the ferry dog loves his perfect job. He greets ferry-goers, fetches the captain’s morning newspaper, tastes the cook’s food, watches babies and barks at seagulls. The captain’s cat is the only one aboard he does not like. One day he doesn’t feel needed and decides to leave and try life on the island. This sweet, simple picture book will appeal to everyone, but especially to children who have either have been on a family vacation that included a ride on a ferry boat or dream of going.

From the book's title with its play on words to its softly painted illustrations, this book will appeal to many readers who have felt the same way Walter the dog does. Walter loves living on a ferry and performing all sorts of tasks for the crew and passengers. If it weren't for that pesky cat, Cupcake, life would be fine. One day, Walter is extremely annoyed by being blamed for Cupcake's mishaps, and he decides to explore land when the ferry docks. But he isn't exactly greeted with open arms, a ...more
A story about a dog named Walter that lives on a ferry. He loves everything about the ferry but one day, no one has time for Walter. And he gets blamed for things he did not do. So he runs away when the ferry docks. And decides life on the ferry is much better - but now he's lost! Will Walter make it back home to his ferry and friends? A great choice for dog lovers or for families that live close to ferries.
Walter is taught a harsh lesson about trying to overstep his boundaries or attempting to live a greater life than the cards he was dealt. (view spoiler)

Truly, a heartbreaking tale.
It's okay. A dog who lives on a ferry has lots of "responsibilities" on board. When the Captain's cat starts doing some of them, the dog decides to leave the ferry. When he tries to do the same thing on land that he did on the boat, he gets yelled at and wants to go home. The cat that he despised helps him find the boat again.
Walter loves everything about his life on the ferry except the Captain's spoiled cat, Cupcake. While Walter delights in being helpful, Cupcake delights in teasing Walter and getting him in trouble. One day Walter decides to leave the ferry. This is a well-paced cooperation story about finding home.

I love love love this story. The art fits perfectly. This could work well for storytime. Walter feels unappreciated and runs away. Neat that it's on a boat and so that is a nice different setting.
The dog enjoys his life as a working dog aboard a ferry, but runs for the shore on a particularly bad day when he feels feeling under-appreciated. Time makes him change his mind and seek out home again.

Always like a new book featuring ferries. This one is okay and has some charm. Recommended for ferry enthusiasts ages 3-5.
I didn't love the art style (the animals' eyes are too small) but it's a really cute story
After reading this book I think that if the Lake Express doesn't have a Ferry Dog, it needs one.
Cute story about a dog who lives on a ferry, but the text is a bit clunky.
