(Updated review) Fantastic. Great start to a new adventure! Being a native Arizonan myself added to the experience, but I think adults and young adults will enjoy this book. A few sudden twists changed the tone of the story entirely... for the better!

The story follows Emma Cartwright and her family on their ranch in Arizona, circa 1891. She has become invaluable to her family, filling the shoes of her late mother by helping her father take care of her siblings.

When her father hires a handsome yo

I received this book for free for agreeing to provide an honest review.

The author dedicated this book to the memory off the nineteen Granite Mountain Hotshots who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty, fighting a fire on June 30th 2013. May their sacrifice never be forgotten.

I loved this book. It starts off as a simple old fashioned cowboy love story, but it has an ending that will knock your socks off. It is the perfect book to be read to a child as a bedtime story, spread outs over s

I really enjoyed the book as I got further and further into it, but I felt like the characters were just a little too flat, and that the story was a little too rushed. When I got to the ending I felt as though I should be in the middle of the book experiencing a climax event that changes the character and really fills her out personality wise, instead of reading the end of the whole book. It touched a little on the "cowboy" feeling with the clothing description and setting, a little on the ...more

I really enjoyed this book.
Emma is a young girl, living in Prescott Arizona during the late 1800s. After her mother dies, she must assume the roll of raising her siblings and doing chores. Her father, a clock-maker, is too busy to help out on the farm; instead he hires handsome, young ranch-hand, Wyatt.
Everything seems peaceful until one day a mob of men ride through, and begin harassing the family—more specifically Emma.
The story takes a turn, and leaves the reader(s) needing answers.

Blowing Off Steam #1 When It Rains, It Pours by Ethan Russell Erway

Disclaimer: I received this book from LibraryThing's early reviewer program in exchange for an honest review

A serial novel, this is a nice beginning to what is obviously a much longer story. Well crafted, with likable characters, he has laid an intriguing foundation upon which to spin his yarn. Will Father recover? Will Emma and Wyatt’s budding romance blossom into love? What is up with Rocky? One thing is certain; Emma and the r

I just don't understand the point to this novella. I do get it that it is a serial story supposedly in the steampunk genre but this installment is too short to generate interest for me. I understand that the author wants to generate revenue by writing a bunch of short novellas in a serial format. As a reader, having to wait many times to read a chopped up story is simply not going to happen. I don't want to have to try and remember what happened in each previous series of the story. It is like ...more

I really enjoyed this brief story--was it a novella, perhaps? Since "#1" is part of its title, I'm guessing maybe it was the first in a series. I was a bit disappointed to come to the end of the story--I'd received it, free, as an e-book, so I really didn't realize it was just a chapter or so of the story. I really got into it and wanted to keep going! I really found the characters interesting, especially Emma, of course. I'll be watching for more of this story!!! Will also look into finding ...more

This book is pretty good, there's only one thing that bothers me. I mean, it has a good premise and I care about the characters. It's just the voice. The voice doesn't come anywhere close enough to the Wild West/Pioneer/Steampunk era it's supposedly set in. It just sounds like a very literate modern day 20 something.

However, it's a pretty good read, I am curious as to what happens and might go hunt down the rest of the series.

I picked it up as a recommendation from a Facebook group, and I am gla

Interesting novella in so many different ways. The characters were extremely well done as well as the descriptions of well, everything. Emma was one of the more captivating characters because of her tenacity and integrity with regards to family.

I didn't even realize it was a western until later in the novella, which is a credit to the writer.

Well written and exciting to the last word. The ending was definitely a surprise.

I can't wait to read the next novella/novel from Mr. Erway.

It starts off as little house on the prairie. Then a stranger walks in to help. An attempted attack; a shooting; a demonic monster; cowboy robots - killed by a robot kid. And finally a steampunk workshop.

Then nothing.

It just grinds to a halt and no sign of any follow up.

A fun Western novella with a dash of steampunk. It's the first in a series that looks very intriguing.
