"Destiny. An arrow pointing into the future."

Oregon author Edward J. Zivica in his acknowledgement section bows first to the whale species - `Always marvelous, always an inspiration and somehow close, all my life' - and that suggests the depth of commitment of this fine debut writer to his art. He has a rich background: born in New York City, joined the U.S. Navy and served in the submarine force as a nuclear reactor operator (more affinity for the deep, for whales), married and had a child, was

Whispering Whale by Edward Zivica is a post-apocalyptic journey that explains and follows the stories of Justin and Nicole, lovers we meet at the beginning of the novel who are struggling to survive on a ruined planet. The story begins with Justin and Nicole working together to gather supplies while on their sailing ship, the Cristine. It is also at this point that we meet the whale. At first, it appears that the whale is a casual observing simply following the Cristine on its voyage since there ...more

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book, but by the time I finished, I was blown away by what an effect it had on me. I usually don't sit and ponder a book like I did this one, particularly once I finished. I told people about it as I was reading it, another sure sign that this book was unusually good. The story was beautifully crafted and genuinely thoughtful, forcing readers to experience this new world along with Justin and Nicole. Despite the overall...headiness of the entire ...more

Each family endures hardships as they travel from their homes to a place called New Atlantis that is prepared for people during this cleansing of the earth. The families each lose people they love on their journey and then meet up in New ...more

It is not often that I come across a book that is so passionately written and compelling from the very start. I find myself reading more and more these days as I get older, but this book made me slow down and savor every page. It was haunting and disturbing at times, but given the times that we live in, perhaps this is the book that people need to experience. This is not a passing fanciful post-apocalyptic story that seems too far-fetched to be frightening; no...Whispering Whale is a ...more

Apocalyptic tale in which two families retreat into the wilderness to avoid the eradication of humanity through global warming and nuclear war. Justin and his family leave Oregon while Nicole and her family leave Washington State. Enduring food shortages, wild dogs and crazy goons, they travel in obscurity searching for a safe haven. Each family suffers the loss of members along the way until they meet near New Atlantis, a place well prepared for the cleansing. After more hardship, Justin and ...more
