This book was originally published in France where he lived much of his life. He began illustrating the bible in 1931. His paintings are beautiful but many are details of a larger work. I wished the book was larger with full illustrations (it is tiny.) The Jewish Canon is the Tanakh which is divided into 3 sections: the Torah (the Five Books of Moses), the Nevi'im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings which has the Song of Solomon). It felt like a miracle to come across a reproduction of a book I had seen in Paris in 1961 (but could not afford to buy then). The illustrations move me profoundly and give a whole new sense of these Biblical texts. The book is small and costs only $19.95. I can think of a dozen people I would like to give it to as a gift.
