Set against the backdrop of New Orleans, the mood for a gritty and crime-infested novel took form. Linda Castillo has long been a top favorite suspense author for me. She never fails to bring out the big guns and create fascinating and realistic characters while balancing a perfect blend of romance and suspense. This story was no disappointment. Not her best book. The hero is a cop, who lives for the job and has two ex-wives as we learn later. He goes to a crime scene where he meets the heroine who says she doesn't remember what happened, he doesn't believe her and is kind of hard on her, even questions her relationship with the old man when she is clear that they were friends and he helped her.

I wanted to like this book a lot, because I liked the most recent suspense novel by the same author, but sadly it was just mediocre. I am going to look for more by her, though, because I think this was her first one, so they must get better somewhere along the way. :)
