A number of compelling elements come together for an involving romantic suspense read in "Eyewitness", from author Carol Ericson. Devon Reese and her son Michael lived a quiet life until a friend and neighbor in their apartment building in San Francisco was brutally murdered. Michael had been especially close to the elderly lady, Mrs. Del Vecchio, and after her death he had become frightful and withdrawn. Devon decides to take Michael back to her hometown of Coral Cove to get away from the murde ...more

In Ericson’s romantic suspense novel, Kieran O’Rourke is reunited with his fiancé and the son he never knew existed after spending four years in an Afghan prison. His memory and his eye are damaged but not enough to erase the memories of Devon Reese completely from him. When Devon begs for help, the wounded hero wastes no time stepping up to the plate. When he learns that his son might have witnessed a murder, the warrior in Kieran surfaces and he will do anything to protect his family.

This book was entertaining, and held my interest, so it fulfilled its purpose as a nice, quick read on a long weekend afternoon. The romance never really got off the ground for me, and the back cover copy ruined much of the "mystery", but I liked the writing. The characters were fine, though a little on the dim side. I have some reservations about using POWs for entertainment purposes - I totally get the appeal, but I'm still conflicted about it. The book had a nice sense of place, though,

Devon Reese's downstairs neighbor was murdered. Her son was so tramatised that Devon took him to her parents home in Coral Cove to recover. It is there that Devon finds her former lover, Kieran O'Roarke recovering from being held captive in Afghanistan. The story unfolds from there. This is a well-written story that really keeps you interested.

I liked it well enough to finish The plot was fairly interesting if not surprising, but the characters didn't really come off the page for me in spite of the trauma Kieren had gone through.
